Mid 19th Century
accurately depicting a sperm whaling scene, showing a full-rigged ship with four whaleboats in various stages of pursuit of a pod of four whales, with three small, barren-looking islands in the background, and the back with a rendering of a two conventional memorial or mortuary vignettes.

EARLY SCRIMSHAW BUSK. 18th/19th
EARLY SCRIMSHAW BUSK. 18th/19th C. whale bone busk with fine two color (red and green) two-sided scrimshaw decoration. Primary decoration depicting a heart over flowering potted plant, tombstone with weeping willow tree, and 12-pointed star over house. Bordered with triangular geometrical design. Back side decorated with flowering vine and rectangular cartouche, 10.25”H x 1.5”W. Busks are long, flat slices out of whalebone ribs that whaling crews decorated with carvings and then gave to their wives or sweethearts once they were back on land after a voyage. Busks were slipped into vertical pocket in ladies’ corsets to stiffen the garment.
