BEN DEDEK (1896-1973) SEABOARD
BEN DEDEK (1896-1973) SEABOARD AIRLINE ILLUSTRATIONBenjamin J. Dedek (1896-1973)Seaboard Airline Streamliner 4022 (1947)This painting shows the first of eleven F3 locomotives that General Motors delivered to Seaboard Air Line (the term 'air line' referring to the purported straightness of the railroad, not the ability to fly) in 1948. The locos were numbers 4022 through 4032 and they were delivered in this color scheme. Seaboard's first Diesels were more brightly colored in a lighter shade of green with lots of yellow and red. It is likely that by the time it ordered these locomotives in 1947, Seaboard had decided the bright colors weren't worth the trouble, at least on its freight locomotives. The original tempera and watercolor on paper depicts a two-unit locomotive pulling red cars through a subtropical Southeast landscape with palm trees. The work is signed lower left by Ben Dedek, head of the General Motors Electro-Motive Division styling department in the early years of the Silver Age streamliner era.Measures 20 x 26 inches.Very good condition, noting some discoloration in the yellow cigar band stripe.Provenance: The Fred Roniger Estate Collection.

CANADIAN EASTERN SEABOARD
CANADIAN EASTERN SEABOARD MAHOGANY SIDEBOARDA very good & important early 19th century Canadian Eastern Seaboard sideboard in mahogany, the top featuring a superstructure fitted with three drawers overtop a base fitted with a central drawer over carved spandrels and flanked on either side by a large drawer, all with cock-beaded detail, original locks & replaced brass back-plates with bail handles, raised overall on opposing rope-carved front supports with reeded knees, together with plain rear supports in back. Although unsigned this very fine piece of early 19th century cabinetry demonstrates several key design elements strongly associated with the workshop of noted Saint John New Brunswick cabinetmaker, Thomas Nisbet (1777-1850). That being said, similar design elements can also be found on examples by one other highly celebrated Saint John cabinetmaker, Alexander Lawrence (1788-1843) who was perhaps Nisbet's closest contemporary both in terms of design & quality, but who very seldom if ever signed his work. It is also perhaps worth mentioning that although the concept of incorporating the three drawer superstructure appears atypical in comparison to most known examples of either man's work, it is most definitely of Scottish influence which would be consistent with the early training that both the aforementioned Scottish-born cabinetmakers would have received. Therefore in observance of these determinations, we can comfortably attribute this sideboard with some degree of certainty to one of these two fine & important Canadian cabinetmakers workshops. Provenance: By direct descent from a New Brunswick Family Estate. Dimensions, 45" high x 69" wide x 23" deep.

FLORIDA SEABOARD RAILROAD NEON SIGN
FLORIDA SEABOARD RAILROAD NEON SIGN 1950SThis great neon sign graced a Seaboard Airline RR terminal. The railway operated all over the Southeast in the 1950s. There were more than a dozen station stops in Florida. The sign measures 57-1/2" high, 10-1/2" wide. Some chipping at top and bottom -- see images for detail. The lights have been tested and they do work, but it is highly recommended that a competent lamp and lighting repair person test and rewire as necessary.
