Chinese embroidered silk woman's tunic and trousers early 20th century Embroidered white silk with stumpwork and metallic-thread embellishments; applied multicolor silk cuffs and hems. PROVENANCE: Acquired by descent from the estate of Dr. Josiah C. McCracken (1874-1962), renowned scholar, humanitarian, physician and missionary to China. Dr. McCracken spent decades as leader and administrator of the St. John's University medical school in Shanghai, teaching modern medicine to thousands of young doctors during his tenure. He was a distinguished and awarded member of this nation's medical community and a cherished friend of the Chinese people.
