Italian neoclassical secretaire , burlwood and satinwood veneers with oak secondary, elaborate inlays and japanned inset panels, hinged fallboard opening to fitted interior over single lower cabinet door opening to shelved interior, tapered square feet, Northern Italian or possibly French, late 18th/early 19th century, 62-1/2 x 36-1/2 x 17 in. Scattered veneer losses, repairs and restorations overall, breaks and repairs to legs with later braces, some distress and losses to japanning, other veneer cracks and warping, brasses probably replaced. From the Estate of the Late Harold K. Bennett, Asheville, North Carolina, purchased from the Estate of the Late William Hudson, Asheville, North Carolina. According to consignors, secretaire descended from the Roman family of New Orleans. Andre Bienvenu Roman was twice antebellum governor of Louisiana.
