GILT-DECORATED BLUE AND WHITE
GILT-DECORATED BLUE AND WHITE 'MERIA SYBILLA MERIAN' BOTANICAL PLATE
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD, CIRCA 1740 ??? ?1740? ????????·???·????????painted in rich blue and heightened in gilding, the centre with two caterpillars crawling across a spray of exotic flowers and a butterfly hovering over them, flowers and insects painted with exceptional detail and very well-shaded, within a decorative dark blue band and an elaborate European style strapwork border, of which gilding still visible, the reverse painted at the rim with a trellis-work diaper, the rim with a brown wash(1)17.6cm diameterProvenance: Private collection, Norwich, EnglandNote: This design is copied from a painting by Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717),a German-born engraver and painter of watercolours, who travelled extensively to the Dutch West Indies and made drawings for a book, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, first published in Holland in 1705, then in France in 1771 as Histoire Génerale des Insectes de Surinam et de toute d'Europe. It has also been suggested that the rim border design, also derived from a European prototype and has been related to designs by Cornelis Pronk, a Dutch draughtsman working for the Dutch East India Company during this period. The origin of this composite design was discovered by Charlotte Jacob-Hanson, “Maria Sibylla Merian: artist and naturalist,” in the Magazine Antiques, vol. 158, no. 2, August 2000, pp. 174-183.One slightly larger blue and white dish (26cm diameter) is in the collection of the British Museum, registration number: Franks.589, which was also exhibited in theNational Museum of History, Taiwan,Ancient Chinese Trade Ceramics, Taipei, 1994, Catalogue, no. 80. NORMAN CHERNER (AMERICAN 1920-1987)
NORMAN CHERNER (AMERICAN 1920-1987) UPHOLSTERED ARMCHAI...NORMAN CHERNER (American 1920-1987) UPHOLSTERED ARMCHAIR, "Cherner Armchair," PROBABLY PLYCRAFT, 1960s, the walnut veneered single molded plywood backrest and seat, mounted with slightly twisted curving arms composed from one continuous bentwood panel and raised on tapering rectangular bentwood legs ending on short circular clear plastic caps, padded throughout and covered in a later red upholstery, verso glue residue and faint shadow from oval Plycraft label now lacking. Height: 31 1/4" Width: 25 1/2" Depth: 22" Note: Paul Goodman owner of Plycraft located outside of Boston transitioned his WWII molded plywood production technology into a market that served the expanding building and furnishings boom of the commercial sector. It is interesting to note that the majority of Plycraft Cherner armchairs from the 1960s utilize domed slot head screws with washers, except for the underside center which is a hexagonal bolt on threaded screw with washer. The legs appear to be ten layers of plywood and are mounted at their ends with the clear plastic/acrylic caps. The Cherner Chair was produced by Plycraft, which included the upholstered version until the 1970s.
Condition:
Chair was reupholstered in this red fabric in 1991, has buildup from use along crest rail and arms, seat red piping trim on one side of seat is missing a 3" section, underside of seat has handwritten black felt tip inscription and due date 5/21/91, also blue wax penciled three times "P26 / 102A." The legs appear to be in original condition with scuff marks, scratches, buildup, and original varnish flaking or worn in areas throughout, leg tips are faded, a bit dry, and clear plastic caps exhibit wear from years of use. The legs do not appear to have been restored. As stated in description the Plycraft oval label was removed but residual glue and the shadow outline is faint but visible. As well its' location between the two front legs close to where they meet is where it was normally positioned and where the shadow/glue residue is found. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder. DAVID K. STONE (1922 - 2001)
DAVID K. STONE (1922 - 2001) "WILLIAM A. ANDERS"David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Major General William A. Anders, USAF" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood William A. Anders Commemorative Cover postmarked September 22, 1990.
William Anders was born October 17, 1933, in Hong Kong, the son of a U.S. Navy officer. After attending school in San Diego County, California, he followed in his father's footsteps and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1955 with a degree in electrical engineering. From there, Anders entered pilot training in the U.S. Air Force, earned a Master's Degree in nuclear engineering and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. NASA then selected Anders for the Apollo program in 1963. On December 21, 1968, astronauts Anders, Frank Borman and James Lovell became the first men to escape the Earth's gravity and orbit the moon aboard the Apollo 8 spacecraft. This mission brought to Earth its first close-up view of the lunar surface, the moon's far side and, perhaps most importantly, paved the way for man's first footsteps on the moon. Less than a year after this momentous mission, Anders served as back-up pilot for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing. He later left NASA to serve in a number of prestigious positions in both the public and private sectors.

2 TRANSLATED NEO-SUMERIAN CLAY
2 TRANSLATED NEO-SUMERIAN CLAY FOUNDATION CONESAncient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, city of Lagash, Neo-Sumerian Period, reign of Gudea of Lagash, ca. 2144 to 2124 BCE. A pair of hand-built clay foundation cones with tapered bodies and discoid heads. Each cone bears 12 columns of inscribed cuneiform text that were formed just prior to being placed inside of a kiln. Clay nails like these are also referred to as dedication pegs or funerary pegs; they were inscribed, baked, and stuck into walls made of mudbrick to mark ownership either by a god or a ruler. These dedications sometimes include stories or boasts about the rulers they describe, and are some of our earliest sources of written royal history. When translated these cones read, "For Ningirsu, the mighty warrior of Enlil, Gudea, governor of Lagash, who built the Eninnu (temple) of Ningirsu, (also) built his Epa, the temple of seven sectors." Size of largest: 4.07" L x 2.14" W (10.3 cm x 5.4 cm)
Cuneiform script is one of the oldest known writing systems in the world, made using a reed as a stylus and scratching wedge-shaped marks onto clay tablets. Early cuneiform was pictographic, but in the 3rd millennium BCE it shifted to the more abstract form you see here. These cuneiform objects are some of the roughly 2 million known from this culture; of these, between 30,000 and 100,000 have been translated. The earliest translations came in 1836 from the work of French scholar Eugene Burnouf and, by the 1850's, multiple scholars were able to produce similar translations, meaning the language had been deciphered.

He then oversaw the design of the new school in Southampton Row from 1905-8. From here, he became an architect for London County Council, was involved with many London societies and was a founding member of theKelmscott Fellowship, a forerunner toThe William Morris Society. His large and varied collection was a reflection of his wide interest in the arts. His archive was purchased by The William Morris Society in 2005.The Irish horticulturist and journalist WilliamRobinson (1838-1935) had a marked effect on the textile arts during the final decades of the nineteenth century. Author ofThe Wild Garden(1870) andThe English Flowered Garden(1883), Robinson rejected the artificiality and formality of High Victorian pattern gardening in favour of naturalised plantings of perennial shrubs and climbers. This approach found favour with Arts & Crafts textiles designers at the time including May Morris.

Tobias states in his patent: "My invention is intended to supersede the use of sand glasses used on board ships, and is described as follows, viz:__ In so calculating the train of the movement and motion and so contriving, graduating and numbering the dial as to divide time in the same manner as seamen and mariners usually do at sea by means of a half-hour sand glass and bell, for the purpose of regulating their several watches on deck and in the manner in which I have contrived the case, and fitted the said timekeeper into it, to answer several purposes in regard to winding up and securing it from injury by wet, and for conveniently and securely attaching it or fixing it to the binnacle ... My said binnacle time keeper therefore answers the several purposes of a watch, a half-hour sand glass, and a bell, with less trouble and more truth."About 500 of these time keepers were constructed in the period between 1812 and 1824. Of these, fewer than 20 are known to still exist.

A HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT FRENCH,
A HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT FRENCH, LOUIS XV LONG-CASE, BY ANTOINE THIOUT, CIRCA 1738 A Historically Important French, Louis XV Long-case, by Antoine Thiout, circa 1738
Regence-Louis XV, ormolu mounted, kingwood, banded marquetry case, retaining Thiout's original equation table inside case door, hand signed and dated 1738. The engraved and silvered dial, signed 'Thiout Laine, Paris', displays the date of the month in a dial aperture. Solar hours and minutes with pierced and engraved brass hands, a blued-steel hand indicating mean minutes. Seconds are indicated on a double 30 second sector with a blued and stepped hand. Eight-day, striking movement has a Bethune's twin pallet escapement of Thiout's design to conform to the long second's pendulum. Time and strike movement strikes solar time on a bell without an equation cam.
Commentary: This mechanism was presented to the Royal Academy by Thiout in 1740 and described and displayed in his important "Traite de L' Horlogerie" in 1741. As this clock was extant in 1740, there is a likely hood that this may have been the actual movement presented to the Royal Academy and is an elegant and important classical French Regulateur de Parguet.
