SEMINOLE INDIAN FIGURES BY HELEN
SEMINOLE INDIAN FIGURES BY HELEN DAVISTwo painted chalk (plaster) figures, a male and a female Seminole Indian. The male is sitting on the ground busily cleaning a fish, while the sits behind a large flat woven basket. The basket has two rounded notches in it that would perfectly fit a cigarette. This piece has some writing on the back "Souviner [sic] of Florida " and a later addition "To Beth from Mother 1957". Helen Davis, a sculptor working at the Community House of Coral Gables in 1935, created these figures as part of a WPA project and the Florida Art Project. She gave them to her students for painting. Chalk is notoriously fragile and prone to paint chipping, but this couple has only a very few fleabites and scrapes. The pieces are around 3-1/2" high.

Chalk is notoriously fragile and prone to paint chipping, but these busts have only a very few fleabites. However, the male broke his neck and his head has been glued back in place.
