THOMAS BEACH (british
THOMAS BEACH (british 1738-1806) "AN OFFICER OF YEOMANRY" Signed and dated 'T. Beach 1774' bottom left, feigned oval, oil on canvas 30 1/4 x 25 1/4 in. (76.8 x 64cm) in a hand carved gilt frame by M. Grieve & Company provenance: Philip Suval Inc., New York, New York. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. ,500-4,000 Condition Summary: The painting is in good condition both aesthetically and structurally. The stretcher is period and quite likely original. The painting has a layer of dirt covering a thick layer of natural resin varnish that is lightly discolored. UV light reveals retouching under the varnish prominent examples of which are seen at the left side of the hair, on the nose and around the left eye. The painting also exhibits traction crackle in the dark colors that has been inpainted. areas conform with mechanical cracks in the paint layer that are visible to the naked eye. The stretcher is period and likely original. There is evidence suggesting that the painting may be lined but this cannot be confirmed without removing the painting from it''s frame.
