RARE 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE STRIKING
RARE 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE STRIKING STICK CLOCK Circa 1850. Hardwood case with lacquered and silvered scale of 13 movable characters, pierced frontplate and verge-and-balance-wheel escapement. Catalog Note: known as Shaku Dokei, the clocks' name derives from its size, the word shaku is a Japanese unit of measurement approximately one foot in length. Up until 1873 the Japanese used a system of unequal hours or seasonal hours (12 hours between dawn and dusk), the hours are engraved onto sliding plates so they can be adjusted according to the season and at the back of each plate is a pin which sets off the striking mechanism on the clock weight in accordance with the unequal hour system.

A Carved Wood Whistler Clock The 14-1/2"H x 6-5/8"W x 2-5/8"D automaton is carved wood with polychrome painting. It depicts a man in a slouchy suit and top hat, whose head moves at the neck leaning on a post with a Swiss chalet clock. The clock winds with one end of the winding key and the whistler with the other. Clock ticks, but is not guaranteed to keep time. Whistler whistles. Stamped on the underside with a logo "KenD" in a diamond shape and "made in Germany".

An Eli Terry Shelf Clock ca. 1850's With mahogany veneers stenciled half columns and splat mirrored tabled below clear rolled glass top painted wood face with Arabic numerals spandrels with strawberry motif with weights pendulum and crank partial paper label inside back.Eli Terry (1772-1852) apprenticed to Thomas Harland and was destined to become one of the most famous of watch makers. The oldest of ten children he made his first clock at age 21. In 1800 he started the first clock factory in America at Northbury a part of Plymouth Connecticut.
