A PAIR OF SITZENDORF "SHEPHERD COUPLE" FIVE LIGHT PORCE...A PAIR OF SITZENDORF "SHEPHERD COUPLE" FIVE LIGHT PORCELAIN CANDELABRAS, MARKED, GERMANY, 1918-1920, each with a removable five-light top fitting on a foliate modeled nozzle with leafy form bobèche and mounted on a tree trunk form stem ending on a flower encrusted stylized groundwork base with a seated shepherdess in traditional attire playing with a sheep jumping in her lap, opposite a seated shepherd youth in similar attire holding a sheep in his lap and cutting shears in his hand, each mounted on a conforming pedestal with pierced trellis panels and embellished with colorful floral blooms, raised on "C" scrolled rocaille and foliage molded tripod feet, verso underglaze blue-crowned "S" with serif mark beneath an overglaze gilt circle enclosing "GERMANY," and one with a partial printed paper label "GERMAN / SOVIE.. / OCCUP.." Height: 22" Diameter: 11" Note: The gilt circle enclosing "GERMANY," was an export stamp last used in 1920. Provenance: Estate of Sara Bailey, Mont Belvieu, Texas
Condition:
Each in good condition with small nicks and chips on some encrusted flower petals and leaves, her forefinger repaired, wax residue on nozzles, surface dust buildup throughout, and normal gilding wear. Lined, restretched on old stretcher, crackle, hole in varnish with some paint loss (burn?), retouch down right side (former stretcher mark?) and down left edge and some small points at top and bottom with less than 2 percent of surface affected; frame possibly regilt, minor losses, abrasions. Descended in Goncharoff family.
