Exceptional painting of African American or Black Canadian shoeshine with 'MONKEY' scrawled on wall in background; subject is carrying a shoeshine kit with the name Sam written on it. A rare artwork by the Toronto painter known for depictions of everyday street life. Painting is on found board that appears to be box lid or part of a piece of furniture. Board measures 18.5x13'' and is framed in simple gilt frame with overall measurements of 25x19.5''. Some chips to frame; painting in excellent condition.

Composition Character Dolls One Mechanical Two dolls of composition depicting a Native American ?and a winking shoe shiner with brush in hand. The shoe shiner is mechanized; when his head is touched the arm moves shining the shoe while the open eye darts from side to side. Inside the back of the doll are the original gears indicating the piece was designed to be wound and played; largest ht. 23 wd. 9 in. Condition: Mechanical doll is no longer in winding condition and has suffered damage to clothing and hand paint. Headdress of Native American is in poor condition.
