Marie Atkinson Hull (American/MississippiMarie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi 1890-1980) "Rocky Shore" oil and mixed media on canvas signed lower left titled en verso on stretcher 36 in. x 30 in. framed. Provenance: Acquired from the artist by the current owner. Note: Marie Hull's style as a painter successfully matured into full abstraction. In the 1950s and 1960s she created a body of work utilizing forms of the full rainbow of colors to create her compositions. Hull often titled her paintings so the viewer is given insight into what is being depicted. The work offered here entitled "Rocky Shore" is a vibrant canvas in which bright shapes of white yellow red and orange are framed by brown green blue and amber forms. Interestingly and rarely found in her work Hull incorporates sand she gathered at the scene with the oil medium creating a visual texture to the painting.
