Short saber possibly French circaShort saber possibly French circa 1780 brass hilt flat cap pommel wood grip wrapped with leather and twisted brass wire steel blade with single fuller. overall L31'' blade L25 7/8'' Provenance: Property deaccessioned from the Centennial Museum at the University of Texas at El Paso to benefit the Museum Collections Fund. (Accession #56.3.7 inked on crossguard) Purchased by Norm Flayderman Wallingford Hall Kennebunk Maine. From the most important American sword collection of Philip Medicus New York New York. Other Notes: The style of this sword is very similar to some of the petit montmorency swords popular in France from 1780 to 1800. Flayderman calls it American but that can be disputed as it is too well-made. Brass guard cracked in two places and rather dirty section of leather is missing at front of grip possibly there was a ferrule which has been lost. Blade dark with spots of pitting and old rust.
