Included is a slip of paper signed 'Respectfully Yours/ L.P. Cesnola' Catalogue note: General Luigi Palma Di Cesnola (1832-1904) was born in the Kingdom of Sardinia, present day Italy. As a youth he served in the Sardinian Army during the First Italian War of Independence; he then served in the British Army during the Crimean War. In the early 1850s, he immigrated to the United States. He entered the American Civil War in 1862 as colonel of the 4th New York Cavalry Regiment, where during the Battle of Aldie he was wounded and taken prisoner, ending up in Libby Prison. His actions during the battle earned him the Medal of Honor. After the war he was appointed United States consul at Larnaca in Cyprus from 1865–1877. During the last decades of his life he served as the first director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1879 until his death in 1904. Dimensions: 9 1/4 x 6 1/2 in. (23.50 x 16.51 cm.)
