MILES CITY, MONTANA WILLIAM &
MILES CITY, MONTANA WILLIAM & ELLA STRONG EPHEMERAPresented in this lot are a Personal Montana Ephemera Collection from Miles City, Montana from the William and Ella Strong Estate, circa 1868 - 1925. William enlisted in the U. S. Army Cavalry in 1868 in Cincinnati, Ohio eventually being assigned to Fort McPherson in Nebraska; the same fort that General Armstrong Custer, Buffalo Bill Cody, the North Brothers and their Pawnee Scouts often frequented during the Great Sioux Indian War of the late 19th century. William Strong's small notebook chronicles events from his time of enlistment. Eighteen (18) pocket calendars dated 1902 to 1925, with entries that chronicle daily life in Miles City. Originally created as a military outpost, Tongue River Cantonment and later Fort Keogh, Miles City became a major town in eastern Montana when livestock speculation brought thousands of cattle to the open ranges in the late 1880s. The railroad was extended through the area, and Texas drove numerous cattle to Miles City to fatten them on free grass and move them to where they could be loaded on trains bound for the slaughterhouses in Chicago. Also included are two (2) First National Bank of Miles City checkbooks from 1912 and 1913, and a bank book from 1907-1914. In 1910 the drive to form an "Old Timers' Association" roster listed Wm. Strong as arriving in September 1877. The roster was published in 1918 in the book "Recollections of Old Milestown" by Samuel Gordon; "Milestown" was the original name of Miles City. Nineteen (19) photos, most of William Strong, one of William in his U S Army uniform taken by prominent photographer C. C. Giers in Nashville, Tn., four of turn-of-the 20th century lake steamers from Puget Sound / Seattle, Washington, the "Indianapolis" and the "H B Kennedy." Lastly, a pane glass portrait of the Strongs, and a Victorian / Edwardian era table top celluloid portrait button of the Strongs. These celluloid portrait buttons were often made to commemorate a wedding or as a mourning piece during the Victorian era, when photography was in its earlier stages and still quite expensive, reserving the act as a planned event instead of an everyday occurrence. These were often displayed during a funeral or memorial service, then staged in the family's cabinet. Items are nicely preserved, age tanning and fading observed.

C. DEC. 25, 1890 GHOST DANCE LAKOTA
C. DEC. 25, 1890 GHOST DANCE LAKOTA PHOTOGRAPHThis is an original, authentic Lakota Sioux Ghost Dance photograph at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota from photographer George E. Trager Northwestern Photographic Co. taken December 25, 1890. This is from the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The image was taken 10 days after the arrest and murder of Chief Sitting Bull (just North at Standing Rock Indian Reservation in South Dakota) pushing tensions near the breaking point, and just 4 days before the U.S. Cavalry killed hundreds of Lakota in the Wounded Knee Massacre, only around 20 miles from this spot (it is easily presumed that some of the members in the photograph were eventually killed at Wounded Knee). There is another promenade or boudoir card photographs that was listed by Swann Auction Gallery in September 2021 which shows two photographs, one being this exact image and the other taken at the exact same time, several of the exact dancers can be seen in both photographs, with the other being marked in the negative, “Rose Bud and Sioux Indian War Dance at Pine Ridge Agcy, Dec 25th, 1890, S. Dak.,”. The back of the card is handwritten in graphite pencil at the top in cursive, “The Ghost Dance”. The card also is printed on the back, “VIEWS Wounded Knee Battle, Indian Camps, War Camps, Indian Chiefs. Everything of interest in the late Pine Ridge War are held by us for sale. Agents wishing to make $10 to $15 per day wanted. Northwestern Photographic Co., Chadron, Neb.” The back also shows a quack Epilepsy Cure stating, “The water from the famous MINNE PAZUTA SPRINGS have cured 20 cases of the worst forms of Epilepsy within the last year. For information and testimonials address Trager & Ford Chadron, NEB.” The photograph truly shows one of the most contentions and important moments in time during the Indian Wars and Native American history. Tatanka Iyotake, better known as Sitting Bull led the Lakota / Hunkpapa Sioux during years of resistance against the brutal anti-Native American policies declared by the United States government. Sitting Bull was killed by the police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation just north of where this photograph was taken during an attempt to arrest him. The authorities greatly feared that Sitting Bull, being the highest person of influence, would join the Ghost Dance movement, which preached resistance to assimilation. This photograph is a reaction to the killing of their beloved leader, taken only 10 days after his death, and eventually led to the great massacre of nearly 300 Lakota Sioux by the U.S. Cavalry. One of the best photographs we have offered and on the public market. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan collection Piedmont, South Dakota. Measures 8.5” by 5”.

A.D.M. COOPER CHROMOLITHOGRAPH -
A.D.M. COOPER CHROMOLITHOGRAPH - "BURNING ARROW" (1904)...**First Time At Auction**
Astley David Middleton (A.D.M.) Cooper (American, 1856-1924). "The Burning Arrow" or "Flaming Arrow" chromolithograph, 1904. An original, antique chromolithograph of "Burning Arrow" (aka "Flaming Arrow") - one of A.D.M. Cooper's most famous paintings. Cooper is best known for his depictions of indigenous peoples with whom he lived in the American West when he was in his early twenties. "Burning Arrow" depicts a group of warriors using a flaming arrow to signal their movements to a distant Indian camp during the Great Sioux War (also called The Black Hills War and known for the famous Battle of Little Big Horn) of 1876 to 1877. Starting at the top and in clockwise order, the figures depicted are as follows: Bull Head (son of Sitting Bull) is the man firing the arrow; Chief Hard Heart is standing with his back to the fire; Sitting Bear is on the ground sitting watching the arrow in flight; Lone Wolf, Buffalo Head, Standing Bear, and two unnamed Indians in the background are also depicted. A remarkable, large-scale, original antique chromolithograph that likely took months to create given its extensive composition and coloration - mounted in an exceptional frame that was artistically designed with carefully selected, museum-quality materials. Size (sight view): 19" L x 25.5" W (48.3 cm x 64.8 cm) Size (frame): 32.625" L x 38.875" W (82.9 cm x 98.7 cm)
A.D.M. Cooper objected to the American Indian Wars and was greatly respected by the indigenous peoples. Cooper exhibited "Burning Arrow" at H.A. Meldrum Company's Free Art Gallery at the Pan American Exposition of 1901 in Buffalo, New York. Cooper's models for this painting included six prominent Sioux Indians who participated at the Indian Congress at the Midway at the Pan Am Expo in addition to two other Sioux Indians. Starting at the top and in clockwise order: Bull Head (son of Sitting Bull) is the man firing the arrow; Chief Hard Heart is standing with his back to the fire; Sitting Bear is on the ground sitting watching the arrow in flight; Lone Wolf, Buffalo Head, Standing Bear, and two unnamed Indians in the background are also depicted.
Interestingly, Cooper first exhibited his 9' x 12' painting of "Burning Arrow" at the Exhibition Hall of the Emporium and Golden Rule Bazaar in San Francisco beginning on January 31, 1900. According to the advertisement in the "The San Francisco Call" newspaper on that date: "'The Burning Arrow'—a realistic painting of an episode of the Sioux-Custer war, by A.D.M. Cooper, a well-known painter of Indian pictures—on free exhibition to-day and until further notice in Exhibition Hall, second floor. The canvas is 9x12 feet in size. Aside from its artistic merits, it will be of special interest to every boy and girl who is studying the history of this country."
Chromolithography was invented by lithographers as a means of printing on flat surfaces by using chemicals instead of relief or intaglio printing. A chromolithograph like this one took months to produce, depending on the number of colors in the image.
