- VINE SKULL CANECa. 1880-Fashioned
VINE SKULL CANECa. 1880-Fashioned of a straight wild vine branch with quirky grown protuberances extending in an integral and natural bulb carved with a human skull, white metal ferrule. Cleverly embedded in the natural structure, the carving summarizes the character of the cane and adds another keynote to its singular personality. A good piece of folk art and social history, this cane could be associated to an occult society or meant as a Memento Mori, reminder of the transitory nature of life and the inevitability of death or simply connected with a pronounced search for marked individual taste in the growing industrial society of its day. In any case, its eccentric originality, surface and rich brown patina make it a fabulous collectable. H. 4 ½” x 2”, O.L. 35”
