The muzzle is decorated with stars and dots. The top flat is signed with script "J M" separated by an engraved star. It is mounted in a full-length maple stock with applied striping and has brass furniture. It has a plain nose cap with 2 long faceted guides and a long plain nose pipe. It further has a 6" long narrow brass wear plate on the bottom of the stock. The trigger guard is typical of the period and very modest. The buttplate is brass with a faceted top tang and a filigree toeplate with four cutouts and a ball finial. The roach-back comb has a long, thin, decorative brass plate attached with iron pins. The lockplate screws pass through brass escutcheons, one of which is an elliptical shaped filigree with two cutouts. The forestock and buttstock have 22 sterling silver inlays in various patterns, some of which are quite elaborate, with the most prominent being a fine spread winged early American eagle with light engraving mounted on the small cheek piece. Below the cheek piece is an unusual brass shield shaped inlay with pick slot at the top. The right side of the buttstock has an extremely elaborate and delicate 4-pc brass filigree patchbox with a lightly engraved lid. It has DBL set triggers. The left side of the buttstock, between the cheek piece and buttplate, is lightly incise carved in arabesque patterns. The forestock has an incised line by the ramrod channel. This same rifle is pictured as item 2 on plate 3 in the book "THE KENTUCKY RIFLE" by John GW Dillin. It is accompanied by a letter signed by Mr. Walter O’Conner dated 3 Dec 03 where-in he states that he has examined this rifle and that it is the same one pictured in the book. EXTREMELY RARE INSCRIBED VOLCANIC PISTOL. Cal. 41, SN 1080. Navy size with 8" oct bbl and integral magazine tube. It has a German silver shaped cone front sight, fixed rear sight and two-piece walnut grips. The top flat of the bbl is marked with Volcanic Repeating Arms Company name and address with "1854" patent date. The serial number appears on the right side of the lever, the left side of the butt under the grip and inside both grips. No further disassembly was affected to verify further numbering. The left side plate is inscribed in period script and block letter engraving, "Lieut. Thos. Gardner / From / SOME OF THE 'RANGERS' / & / ORIGINAL 'CROTONS' / March 12th, 1857." The right side plate and part of the receiver is inscribed in period engraved script and block letters, "Keep this Weapon 'TOM' / Never USE it in a BAD CAUSE / Never SURRENDER it in a GOOD / Remember that FREEDOM is worth more than LIFE / That FREEMEN never can be SLAVES." Apparently, in the period pre-dating the Civil War, Gardner was a member of "The Rangers", who surely were "free-staters" participating in the violent struggle in Kansas and Missouri during that time. Preliminary internet research disclosed that Thomas W. Gardner enlisted as a Captain in Company "G" Ohio 90th Infantry and resigned on 5/17/1863. This pistol is accompanied by Gardner’s application for pension from Civil War disability dated in 1915. It appears that he passed away in 1918 in Missouri. Also accompanied by a copy of an article from the March, 1989 issue of The Gun Report wherein there is an article on this pistol written by Mr. Hamilton. Additional, more in-depth research should produce some interesting information regarding "The Rangers" and "Crotons". It has been suggested that the "Crotons" may have a connection to an old Ivy League school such as Yale or Harvard. CONDITION: Very good. No original finish remains with the iron being a silver, gray-brown patina. Brass frame and side plates show moderate wear with a few nicks and dings and light scratches and retains a medium to dark mustard patina. Tops of the side plates show light bruises. Follower and spring are replacements. Left grip has a replaced long sliver from the toe and the right grip escutcheon is loose in the wood. Otherwise they retain 30-50% original varnish on the left side and 15-20% on the right side. An extremely rare and important volcanic. Mechanics are a little loose but functional. Strong bright bore with fine pitting. Hamilton Collection 4-53497 JR973 (40,000-60,000)

CASED PAIR OF ENGRAVED COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVERS. Cal. 44. SN 81248 & 81253. This pair is assembled from mostly orig parts with fine Nimschke style New York engraving, almost certainly done in the Nimschke shop. Both revolvers have 8" rnd bbls with brass trigger guards, iron back straps & raised carved Mexican eagle 1-pc ivory grips. Both frames have full coverage, New York style (probably Nimschke) foliate arabesque pattern engraving, not quite matching, but of similar patterns. Each has engraving on both sides of the bbls & hammers with the trigger guards & back straps similarly engraved. SN 81248 has had its back strap replaced and engraved to match and the engraving on the hammer nose re-cut. Grips are modern replacements, artificially aged with applied wear. Flat head hammer screw is also a replacement. Last two digits on the cylinder are over-stamped indicating a replaced cylinder. SN 81253 has orig raised carved Mexican eagle grips with replaced re-engraved & re-numbered back strap & trigger guard. Flat head hammer screw, butt strap screw & front trigger guard screw are all replacements, as is the wedge which is numbered "152". Last digit on the cylinder serial number has been over stamped indicating a replacement cylinder. Other than the above the balance of both revolvers appears to be orig. Accompanied by an early walnut silverware style case with brass medallion in the lid & a mortised brass lock with shield shaped escutcheon. It is lined with red velvet & compartmented for the revolvers, an early Colt's Patent angle spout flask, an iron 2-cavity Colt's Patent bullet mold, an "L" shaped nipple wrench, two packs of combustible envelope cartridges, a lacquered tin of Eley's caps & two compartments with lead bullets. CONDITION: As noted above, otherwise fine overall. SN 81248, with matching wedge, retains 20-25% orig blue in the very sheltered areas with the balance of the iron a cleaned gray metal color. Trigger guard retains 10-15% silver-plating. Replacement grips are fine with age lines. Good mechanics, bright shiny bore with scattered light pitting. SN 81253 retains traces of orig blue on the bbl with the balance of the iron a gray metal color and the trigger guard a lovely brass patina. Orig grips have a number of age lines on the bottom, extending up the sides with a replaced sliver on the right heel & repaired chips on the right toe. Grips show moderate to heavy wear with a wonderful mellow patina. Good mechanics, strong bright bore with scattered pitting. Case has a crack across the lid with light handling & storage marks and retains most of its orig varnish. Interior is faded & moderately soiled. Flask retains about 50% orig finish and the mold about 75% orig blue. Cartridges & cap box are fine. 4-57084 (14,000-18,000)
