A Japanese Carved Bamboo Folk Art
A Japanese Carved Bamboo Folk Art Cane With a curved handle with a ball handle at the top, metal and rubber tip at the end, approx. 35-1/2"L. The shaft is decorated with delightfully carved relief images of animals appearing through "holes"; at the top a rat, his tail appearing through a lower hole, second a monkey, his leg appearing through a lower hole, next an owl on a branch, then a rabbit, his hind quarters appearing through a lower hole, then a puppy with his hind quarters appearing through a lower hole. Below the puppy is a bit of foliage and a mons and some calligraphic characters.

the mountain is finely and deeply carved in high relief and undercut around the sides with a gathering of scholars, some seen walking up the rockworks while others are already gathered in pavilions nestled amidst pine trees. Near the top, some scholars are proceeding up a mountain path to a gathering near a rocky outcrop.
