Grey attended the University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship. He never played professionally although his brother Romer (''R.C.'') played minor league ball (and one major league game with the Pirates). Zane still enjoyed baseball and played on several amateur teams through the years including the Orange Athletic Club (NJ) one of the best amateur teams of the early century. Grey concluded that dentistry was probably a more stable career choice although not one with which he was ever happy.
