Large Antique Indian Gilt BronzeLarge Antique Indian Gilt Bronze Mortar & Pestle, 19th century or earlier. Used for everything from cracking nuts to grinding grain. This particular mortar stands just over 8 inches tall and five inches wide allowing for lots of spices to be ground at once, with a wide base for stability. Overall in good condition with obvious wear to the mortar as well as the pestle. Size: mortar 8 1/4'' H x 5'' W, pestle 10.5'' H x 2'' W (approx.) Provenance: Collected between 1945-1960 by Carl O. Winberg, former United States Government diplomat, agricultural attache and Foreign Service officer serving across Indonesia, India Burma, Bangladesh and Australia; thence by descent to the present owner.
