A LOUIS XVI REVIVAL ORMOLU
A LOUIS XVI REVIVAL ORMOLU MOUNTED ACAJOU MOUCHETÉ AND ...A LOUIS XVI REVIVAL ORMOLU MOUNTED ACAJOU MOUCHETÉ AND TULIP WOOD PARQUETRY BONHEUR DU JOUR, PARIS, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, with a central rectangular cabinet surmounted by a vert de Maurin marble top, above a recessed paneled door centering cube parquetry within kingwood borders and a nicely detailed bronze doré mount of bow ribbons suspending a blossoming garland, enclosed by molded trim with canted top corners aside marguerite bronzes and a cast floral escutcheon with key opening to an interior fitted for a single shelf (now lacking), flanked on exterior by rounded and fluted corners topped by tapering fluted mounts modeled with leafy swags, within side open shelves over cube parquetry back panels above two pairs of curved short drawers flanking a "T" form open compartment with a gilt tooled tan leather writing surface, over two cube parquetry inlaid drawers with laurel wreath bronze pulls and flanked by rounded corners mounted with rectangular foliate bronzes, raised on tapering circular fluted legs ending in conforming bronze sabots, includes one key. Height: 57 1/4" Width: 39 1/4" Depth: 19 3/4" Note: This bonheur du jour is beautifully constructed and utilizes costly woods such as acajou moucheté (plum pudding mahogany), tulipwood, kingwood, and mahogany. The back has small screws (not nails), and the drawer bottoms have mahogany veneered on both the top and underside of the bottoms. A few of the bronze mounts were removed to look for any identifying marks but none found. Beautifully finished and expensive when first purchased this lovely desk has no identifying marks other than hand inscribed "gauche" (left) and "droite" (right) on the drawers. A noted Parisian establishment Maison Kreiger comes to mind (1826- ca.1900) that made furniture of this quality, style, and period, and often used a paper label which more often than not is lost over the years.
Condition:
Gilding worn in protruding areas, slight edge wear throughout, some scuff marks, dings, scratches, lacking the small shelf for interior of cabinet, leather writing surface with small scratches from use, and surface build up throughout.
