Jones (Tennessee, 1878-1958) oil painting (canvas laid on board) depicting a sunlit creek bed in the Great Smoky Mountains, with water rushing over boulders at the edge of a lush tree line. Blue-green mountains in the background with a sliver of cloudy blue sky in the upper right-hand corner. Signed in red lower left, and additional signature and partial date in black at lower right. Housed in a grey painted wood frame with gilt accent and off-white fillet. Roman numeral III in pen, en verso. Sight: 11 1/2" H x 13 1/2" W. Framed: 15 3/8" H x 17 1/2" W. First half of 20th century. Note: Jones was an Impressionist painter from Woodstock, New York, and established the Cliff Dwellers studio in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Condition:
Canvas laid on board. Surface grime and scattered abrasions, largest measuring 1" x 1/8". Some of the scattered areas of paint flaking reveal various colors underneath, suggesting the possibility of this current work being painted over a previous oil. Canvas possibly cut, date at lower right partially lost. Frame with some wear and three small nail holes to sight edge.

Two African American figures are visible in foreground. Unsigned. Last quarter of the 19th century. 14" by 23 3/4" sight, 23 1/4" by 33 1/2" framed in ornate, possibly original giltwood and composition molded frame. Provenance: acquired from an African American family in Montgomery County, Tennessee. According to oral history, it descended to them from one of the subjects in the painting (Bickers family). Condition:
Blacklighting reveals light inpainting on cabin and trees to the left of cabin. Note a few minor areas of paint loss near bottom edge. Some wear and abrasions to frame.

1st item: Foxing spots, largest 1/4", scattered on surface of sheet. Not examined outside of frame. 2nd-3rd items: "Mount LeConte" etching is mounted to matte and has minute scattered foxing spots, plus scuff marks, largest 1 1/2", en verso . "In the Smokies" has 1 1/4" printed black line, top left, toned edges, and black scuffs marks, largest 1/2", lower center. 4th-6th items: Ghost marks from old tape, traces of black construction paper, visible en verso of Mill etching. Ghost marks from glue, traces of green card stock, visible en verso of Winter etching. Minute scuffs, scattered on surfaces of sheets.
