Jan Christian Smuts British General ANS 1917 Smuts Jan Christiaan (1870-1950). ? Prime Minister of South Africa (1919-24 1939-48); served as a general in World War I and British field marshal in World War II and was the only man to sign the peace treaties of both wars.? ANS 1p November 14 1917 at London on Savoy Hotel stationery addressed to a Mr. Rountree. Condition: Very good condition with only a minor water strain affecting the extreme riight edge of the signature.

THE STREAM OF TIME: A CHRONOLOGICAL ARRANGEMENT OF HISTORY BY MISS SMART (The Christian Lady's Magazine, 1837), being a broadside laid to linen, approximately 9 feet long x 15 in. wide on a wooden roller; the whole of history, ecumenical and secular, is presented on either side of a great meandering stream, the back of the linen is affixed with a manuscript presentation panel, reading: "Uncle Henry Bardwell was a Deserter and very strict in his Religious opinions He gave me this chart in 184_ when leaving him and I never saw him afterward he dying soon after - My Mother's folk were of the Church of England. My Father John Fey Bardwell being a Free thinker and was as honest and as upright a man as ever lived generous and open hearted to a fault, His memory is ever graced in my recollection. He was open handed to his friend and companions who lived on him and his recollections to me is sacred and second only to the ---?---- This chart I send and make a present to Kate Post./ July 1st 1893 Fey Bardwell."

JAMES MONGIN SMITH PORTRAIT MINIATURE, 1821 American school, possibly Southern, 1821. Oval watercolor mourning portrait miniature of James Mongin Smith (American, born Beaufort, SC, April 1, 1798, died Marietta, GA, November 26, 1859), together with a plated lock of his hair to the verso, in a 12k yellow gold frame under glass, and contained in a fitted case. Unmarked. Provenance: Likely given to his wife Laura Margaret Smith (nee Cole), then to her daughter, Laura Margaret Brumby (nee Smith), then to her daughter, Laura Margaret Hoppe (nee Brumby). A calling card for Mrs. Lewis D. Hoppe with personal inscriptions accompanies this lot. Note: Mrs. Lewis D. Hoppe, (nee Laura Margaret Brumby, 1867-1955), was the daughter of James Remley Brumby Sr. (1846-1934), founder of The Brumby Chair Company of Marietta, GA. The subject of the miniature was her maternal grandfather. James Mongin Smith was a rice planter who attended Yale University as well as Princeton University, classes of 1819 and 1822. His home Orange Hall, in Marietta, GA, burned in the early 1900s. It was a smaller replica of an earlier home, also of the same name in St. Mary's, GA. It is still standing. Approx. 2.75" x 2.25" (frame); 2.625" x 2.125" (sight).
