In 1821, Lyon sailed on Commander Perry's second exploratory Arctic voyage to discover the elusive Northwest Passage, and in 1824 he captained the HMS Griper on his second Arctic mission where he spent two years documenting local customs and sketching scenes -- his journals and drawings becoming important historic reference sources.
