- REGENCY PENWORK, PAINTED AND PARCEL
REGENCY PENWORK, PAINTED AND PARCEL GILT TILT-TOP GAMES TABLE28 1/8 x 21 x 21 in.
Note: This table is reputably from Tyrrells, 2 Greek Street, Soho, London. Very little is know about Tyrrells, one known table of similar form is listed. Tyrrells is listed in the early 19th century as a fancy stationers shop.
We would like to thank James Abbott for confirming that Stéphane Boudin was the Maison Jansen designer for the Biddle projects. He noted, "The chess/games table is very much in keeping with the decorator's preference for black lacquer and 'Japanned' accent pieces...other decorators of the time were 'doing this', but Boudin 'did it' for the likes of: the Duchess of Windsor; Jayne Wrightsman; Lilian, Princess of Réthy; and yes, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (White House Queen's Sitting Room)...".
Note: Penwork, the practice of creating designs in pen and watercolor, was a popular pastime from about 1780-1850. Designs can either be applied in black to a white gesso base, or in a practice called 'voiding' which referred to working in reserves on a black ground. The coats of arms on this table represent the twenty-five barons who acted as sureties and were present at the signing of the Magna Carta by King John in 1215. King John and the surety barons can be seen in scenes on the edges of all four sides of the table.

- 1796 MYDDELTON SILVER TOKEN PCGS PR63Philip
1796 MYDDELTON SILVER TOKEN PCGS PR63Philip Parry Price Myddelton (English, 18th century) and Conrad Heinrich Kuchler (German, 1740-1810). One 1796 silver token featuring on the obverse a woman, a figure representing Hope, leading two children towards Lady Liberty surrounded by ""British Settlement Kentucky 1796." The reverse shows a downtrodden Britannia surrounded by "Payable by P.P.P. Myddelton." Graded by PCGS as PR63 indicating an average or slightly weak strike with moderate marks or hairlines.
In the winter of 1795-1796 Myddelton advertised large tracts of land he had bought in Kentucky and convinced over 1,200 farmers, artisans, and laborers to move with him. Together with Matthew Boulton of the Soho Mint and Conrad Kuchler, a German engraver, he designed these tokens for his new settlement. The design has been interpreted as an allusion to Britain's loss of the American colonies and perhaps even more specifically to the defeat at Yorktown. It was soon after the first coins were struck that Myddelton's plans were dashed. His plans for a colony in Kentucky were in breach of a 1783 statute. The audacity of his plan and especially of the design of his coins, featuring a dejected Britannia, earned him three and a half years in London's Newgate prison. Only 53 silver specimens were struck in March of 1796, 49 of which were held by the Soho Mint until they were sold into the private market.

- 10TH C. INDIAN RAJASTHAN RELIEF LION,
10TH C. INDIAN RAJASTHAN RELIEF LION, ELEPHANT, CONSORT...South Asia, India, Rajasthan, ca. 10th to 13th century CE. A remarkable figural relief sculpture, meticulously carved from sandstone to depict a lion, an elephant, and a female consort. Posed as if climbing up the wall, the ferocious feline looks back over its shoulder to face left as the comparably petite elephant stands below it, wearing a slender headband and also gazing left. The sensual consort or apsara stands to the right, displaying a slender, scantily clad body with voluptuous breasts. She holds an object in both hands and gazes downward, her heavenly visage framed by elongated ears, bulbous earrings, and an elaborate coiffure, as collar necklaces adorn her chest. A special example from Rajasthan, in northeastern India, which has a unique artistic tradition that is rarely seen in Western collections. Size: 8.6" W x 17.4" H (21.8 cm x 44.2 cm); 20.2" H (51.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Surviving ancient reliefs and carvings from monuments, religious sites, tombs, and palaces - being some of the most durable forms of art - inform us about the beliefs of ancient peoples throughout the world and human history. How remarkable that virtually all cultures have felt the need to express their creative sides in this vein.
According to Pushkar Sohoni in "Old fights, new meanings: Lions and elephants in combat" (Res: Anthropology and aesthetics 2016/2017, vol. 67-68: 225-234 pp.), "For over a millennium in South Asia, the visual trope of a triumphant lion vanquishing one or several elephants has been common in architectural sculpture, both in the round and in relief... In the rather limited scholarship on this motif, diverse interpretations have been offered. Although its presence has remained fairly stable through time, there exist many minor variations on this motif, including the use of leonine creatures variously described as vyalas or yalis, and the incorporation of other fantastic creatures known popularly as makaras in such combats. In South India, the myth of the fantastic composite animal called the Sarabha takes this imagery yet further. Yet, the simple image of a lion victorious over one or more elephants was situated very strategically within certain architectural programs for given periods and places."
Cf. Figures 1, 4, and 6 in Sohoni, Pushkar, "Old fights, new meanings: Lions and elephants in combat" (Res: Anthropology and aesthetics 2016/2017, vol. 67-68: 225-234 pp.).
