GRAND TOUR BRONZE STATUE "WINGED VICTORY", G. SOMMER, N...Italian Grand Tour patinated bronze sculpture of Nike Winged Victory standing on a black marble sphere, attired in a classical robe, holding a bow, and extending a crown of olive leaves, with a later metal band with a red stone wrapped around her right arm, resting on a marble pedestal. Signed "G. Sommer Napoli" on verso of garment. 32" H x 18 1/2" W x 14" D. Late 19th to early 20th century. Note: the G. Sommer foundry in Naples was one of several Neapolitan foundries producing reproductions of Classical sculptures (including many unearthed at Pompeii and Herculaneum) in a variety of sizes and finishes during the last half of the 19th century as Grand Tour souvenirs. The Sommer foundry merged with the J. Chiurazzi foundry in the early 20th century.
