A certificate attesting that he delivered 52 gallons of "Spirits" from the State Store to Anthony Wayne on Jan. 2, 1780. Docketed in Wayne's handwriting.

Southern School portrait and frame, young man wearing white cravat and black coat, set against a red-draped window, said to be John Alexander Lillington (North Carolina, 1725-1786), a Revolutionary War hero, but likely his son or grandson John Alexander Lillington by tradition, unsigned, oil on canvas, circa 1830, 26-1/4 x 22 in.; fine American 19th century gilt wood and composition frame with oak leaf, acorn and bead decoration, ivy leaf and vine panel, stylized anthemion cove and corners with geometric bosses. Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur Comte de Rochambeau (1725 - 1807) was the French Marshal who commanded French forces sent to aid the Americans in the Revolutionary War. Along with George Washington he was essential in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He is considered a ''Founding Father'' of the United States and was an original member of the Society of Cincinnatus. Condition: Minor toning especially along edge where mounted in a sheet of heavy paper.

FRANCIS HOPKINSON, REVOLUTIONARY WAR BONDExceedingly rare Revolutionary War bond, dated 1780, signed by FRANCIS HOPKINSON, a founding father and signer of the Declaration of Independence for the state of New Jersey. Hopkinson designed Continental money and two early flags, one for the United States and one for the Navy. Made out to John Harleston of South Carolina, a senior officer in the Revolutionary Army who was killed in battle in the spring of 1781. Document measures 5-3/8" x 10-1/4". This document is one of several dozen important signed pieces in today's sale that were part of a large collection of American historical documents from 1650 through WWII. The estate collection, assembled from about 1920-1960, has never been offered for sale at auction. See images. This item can be shipped in-house.

WALTER STEWART, REVOLUTIONARY OFFICER, ALS, 1793 Walter Stewart (1756-1796, Officer in the Continental Army, after the war a merchant in Philadelphia and major General of Militia) ALS, German Town, October 13, 1793, to John Barclay (1749-1824, Revolutionary War soldier, Mayor of Philadelphia, 1791-'3, President of the Bank of Pennsylvania, founded in 1793); 1 1/2 pp. 4to, signed twice by Stewart and apparently docketed by Barclay. Learning that his nephew, who handles his business has fallen ill (presumably with yellow fever which was then epidemic), Stewart asks for some grace from the bank because of large debts coming due at once.

RICHARD VARICK, NYC MAYOR, REVOLUTIONARY WARHandwritten letter signed by Richard Varick, known as "the forgotten founding father," a Revolutionary War officer and later mayor of New York City (1789-1801). Letter pleads for aid from the government for the family of a deceased officer, Col. Peter Fell, and outlines his faithful service during the war under General Clinton. "I was informed during the Revolutionary War ... that the said Col. Fell by his great activity and extreme exposure, in wet and cold, and by night and by day, on theAmerican lines, had very much impaired his health and had become severely afflicted by rheumatic affections in his limbs, which so much increased as entirely to disable him from walking and helping himself in any way ... until the day of his death." Dated 1827, with a postscript by Leonard Bleecker (brother of the NYC businessman after whom Bleecker Street is named) affirming what Varick has written. Letter measures about 9-1/2" x 8". SAMUEL HAVEN REGARDING THE END OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, JULY 10, 1782, two-sided letter and envelope, note with red seal Provenance: Catalogue Note: Ezra Stiles (1727-1795) was President of Yale College from 1778 to 1795, and an ardent Son of Liberty, serving as the first President of the Society of the Cincinnati in Connecticut, he was friends with Benjamin Franklin, published religious text throughout his lifetime. In the letter, Rev. Stiles reference the Battle of the Saintes (April 9-12, 1782) where the British defeated the French Navy in retaliation to their blockade during the Siege of Yorktown. He also references the Battle of Guilford Court House in March 1781.
