Rare John Abbot watercolor (British/Georgia, 1751-1840), Summer Sparrow or Grass Sparrow, No. 49, Abbot notes "is the only one I believe that stays with us all the year, the rest leaving us in the spring, has a pretty note in the spring, is chiefly on the ground in the grass, is 6 inches long & 8 broad, 12 feathers in the tail. Nest compost of dried grass on the ground and under some small bush among the grass, small white oblong eggs," watercolor and graphite on laid paper affixed to Chetham Library's volume, bordered paper, original page 11-1/8 x 8-5/8 in., volume page 16-1/8 x 11-7/8 in.; black-painted gilt wood frame. Tacked at edges with glue, very minor foxing; frame with abrasions. Collection of artist; John Leigh Philips, 1761-1814, Manchester; John Radcliffe, a proprietor and librarian of Chetham Library; Chetham Library, Manchester; Christie's, New York, October 1, 1980, lot 127 (four volumes); Andrew Crawley, Director, Ibarcord Group Fine Arts; Purchased by the Griffins, probably in January, 1981.
