FINE GOTHIC REVIVAL CARVED ROSEWOOD
FINE GOTHIC REVIVAL CARVED ROSEWOOD MARBLE TOP TABLE29 x 44 x 44 in.
Note: The above offered "table is one of several hexagonal marble-topped examples squarely in the refined Louis Philippe style. These tables almost certainly were made in the shop of a French cabinetmaker like Alexander Roux. No table of this form is labeled or associated with a bill of sale. The principal motifs associated with the Louis Philippe style, often wrongly identified as Charles X, are magnificently arrayed in the offered table. The flat base with three trefoil feet is seen in many examples of American furniture and was a recognized hallmark of the Gothic style, although it sometimes supported tables, stands, and screens with Elizabethan or classical detailing. The six cluster columns with floral bud bases and capitals are somewhat ambiguous in style but certainly suggest medieval carving. Hanging inside the columns in a sort of clerestory area is a tracery lantern that had to be assembled and installed before the table was assembled. Both the columns and the lantern enter a large block which in turn supports two horizontal rails from which the six frieze rails are suspended. The frieze is worked in another characteristic Louis Philippe motif that was much copied in England and America, the clipped ogival arcade with turned pendants and corner turrets. Other fine details of the table include reel and arch moldings. Not all New York Gothic furniture with Louis Philippe traits was made by French cabinet makers. English and German competitors incorporated some of the ornamental vocabulary of French furniture in their production models by mid-1840's, but these makers rarely achieved the sophisticated effects seen here, nor did they lavish as much fine workmanship on their products. This table represents a high point in New York City production between the waning of late classical and early mannerist (pillar and scroll) style and the triumph of the rococo revival in the 1850s." - Robert F. Trent.
An identical table sold in these galleries on April 2, 2016, Lot 2, The Collection of Judith Hollander, for $25,000 hammer price.
Condition
In good restored condition. The replaced marble top with minor staining, pitting and scuffing. Formerly had a wooden top, now lacking. Minor chips to the edges. Some repairs to the pendants. Scattered staining to the center of the pedestal base. One, possibly two feet facings replaced. Larger acorn finial and several smaller ones replaced. In generally good condition and refinished. Structurally sound. Very fine quality. Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.

RARE RUSSIAN BRASS-MOUNTED MAHOGANY
RARE RUSSIAN BRASS-MOUNTED MAHOGANY ARCHITECTS TABLE, IN THE MANNER OF DAVID ROENTGENThe hinged top fitted with a ratchet mechanism above a leather-lined writing surface and one drawer fitted with a sliding leather-lined surface and a secret inkwell drawer, flanked by candle slides, raised on tapering fluted legs ending in sabots.
30 x 36 3/4 x 24 1/4 in.
Note: David Roentgen (1743-1807) was a German cabinet-maker who trained in his father's (Abraham) shop and ultimately inherited it in 1772. He was known for beautiful marquetry inlays and creating mechanical furniture. He had Queen Marie-Antoinette of France and Empress Catherine the Great of Russia as great patrons who encouraged him to great heights. In the late 18th century he was known for simple mahogany veneers inlaid with brass and fitted with secret drawers and a sophisticated mechanical interior. He had shops in St. Petersburg and Berlin and influenced many. This architects table is influenced by Roentgen's designs and cabinet-making skills.
Condition
The table sun bleached with a nice warm color. Repaired age split on the top. In good restored condition. The candle slides with fading spots. Expected nick, scuffing and general wear. Very fine quality, structurally sound. Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.

FINE GEORGE II MAHOGANY COMB BACK
FINE GEORGE II MAHOGANY COMB BACK WINDSOR ARMCHAIR43 1/4 x 30 x 23 1/2 in., height of seat 17 1/2 in.
Note: An identical Windsor chair is illustrated in Cotton, Bernard D., The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, Suffolk: Antique Collectors Club Publishing, 1990, p. 46, fig. TV17. This identical Windsor model is also illustrated in a Vernay & Jussel, Inc. catalog with an accompanied footnote: The system of roads left by the Roman occupation of Britain had remained, for almost 1,700 years, the basis of land travel in all areas of the island. It was only at the start of the eighteenth century that major improvements and expansion of the roads began, largely due to the impetus of trade requirements. One by-product of this new ease of travel was the pooling in London of talent drawn from the provincial areas. Gifted craftsman were able, as at no time before, to make the journey "up to London", from any part of the Kingdom, and profit from the higher wages and opportunities for advancement in the metropolis. Conversely, as people returned to their homes from a London visit, they carried back with them new ideas and new styles, profoundly influencing local customs.
This intercourse between London and the provinces led to an interesting cross-fertilization of styles, and local craftsman, their talent bred within the framework of an inherited tradition, refined rather than abandoned that tradition in the sophisticated, international atmosphere of the city.
The elegant adaptation of the popular Windsor chair is a product of such exchange. here the native beech, yew and ash have been replaced by imported (an expensive) mahogany. The flat out-scrolling arms and seat, the deeply scrolled brackets to the acanthus carved cabriole legs were all fashionable in the second quarter of the (18th) century. Most remarkable is the use of French scroll toes, so popular in the Rococo, integrated with perfect skill into a purely traditional design. "It is estimated that in 1750, 1 out of every 6 Englishman had had direct contact with the capitol." See Wrigley, " A Simple Model of London's Importance, Past and Present ", No. 37, July 1967.
We are grateful to Chis Jussel for providing us with this information.
Condition
Repaired top rail in two spots, one corner block missing. Minor glue residue on the stretcher. Expected wear and scuffing throughout. Structurally sound, good overall condition, grand scale. Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.

PEABODY-RIG REDHEAD DRAKEGeorge
PEABODY-RIG REDHEAD DRAKEGeorge Augustus Peabody (1831-1929) Rig
Danvers, MA, c. 1850
15 3/4 in. long
This very early and exceptional hollow redhead drake is from the rig of George A. Peabody, a friend and fellow Harvard graduate of Dr. John C. Phillips (1876-1938).
The removable head is attached by three brass pins, one of which is threaded and held tight by a nut on the underside of the decoy. Matching "XXXI" incisions are on the facing surfaces inside the neck seam. This meticulously crafted removable head system is reminiscent of the dovetailed geese and shorebirds and the Osgood geese. The head is slightly turned and features broad cheeks and detailed bill carving. The long and hollowed body is finished with elaborate wing carving and fine paint. This decoy is perhaps the earliest known example to show this level of sophisticated wing carving.
The bottom board is securely affixed with both nails and screws and is twice branded "G. A. PEABODY."
Original paint with light gunning wear, flaking, and a bill tip chip.

THE MCCLEERY BOYD MERGANSER
THE MCCLEERY BOYD MERGANSER DRAKEGeorge Boyd (1873-1941)
Seabrook, NH, c. 1910
18 ¾ in. long
“I had the good fortune of visiting with Jim McCleery on several occasions in his home in Texas. He was one of the most noble gentlemen I have ever met and he was a consummate host! I remember our visits as lively affairs that included conversations with his pet parrot, checking out his tortoise in the backyard, and preparing Mexican dinner feasts in the kitchen. Conversations after dinner eventually came back to shorebirds and waterfowl and I was amazed at Jim’s knowledge of all things bird related and how he viewed decoy collecting.
"He was a great teacher, and at all times a student. Nuances of decoys and their makers came second nature to Jim and he would often pick up two birds and reveal how the two related. His take was different from any other collector I have ever met. I believe Jim viewed decoy collecting as a giant puzzle, and he was a master at connecting its pieces.
"Jim reserved special spots on his shelves, fireplace, and walls for his favorite birds. I remember the first time I saw the George Boyd Mergansers on display in his home. The turned-head hen swimmer graced Jim’s coffee table alongside the famous dovetailed goose and Crowell’s preening goose. Her presence was bold and animated; I was so enamored looking at those three birds, it was a half hour before I realized that Jim owned a matching drake!”
— Stephen O’Brien Jr.
The McCleery red-breasted merganser pair represents two of the most refined carvings to come out of New England. They literally sit head and shoulders above all other Boyd merganser examples with their uplifted heads, broad shoulders, and wide and sophisticated paddle tails.
The delicately carved head is turned to the left approximately thirty degrees with a forward-reaching and uplifted posture. The surface features both concise paint patterns and the artist’s finest stippled paint along the sides. True to the sex, Boyd used red glass eyes for this drake, contrasting the amber eyes of the hen. The pencil-thin upturned bill features nail carving and a mortise-and-tenon fit hardwood bill, identical in construction to the maker’s shorebirds.
The bottom retains the “McCLEERY” ink stamp.
Outstanding original paint with light, even gunning wear and a tight age line along the bottom.

JACOB EICHHOLTZ OIL PORTRAIT OF
JACOB EICHHOLTZ OIL PORTRAIT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON.Rare and Important Jacob Eichholtz Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting of George Washington. Original and untouched. Unsigned. (Lancaster and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1776-1842). So called Stuart's Vaugn-type portrait. We know that Eichholtz traveled to Boston to meet Stuart sometime in 1809-1810, sponsored by William Barton of Lancaster, who sought to advance Eichholtz's career. While in Boston Eichholtz observed the work of Stuart, sat at Stuart's easel, and learned all that could be gathered in the space a few short weeks. Shortly after returning to Lancaster, Eichholtz presented William Barton, Esq. with a small copy of a Stuart portrait of George Washington, a portrait which I believe Eichholtz would have painted in Stuart's studio. Barton had served under Washington, and even been offered a territorial governorship by Washington. Thus, it is easy to imagine that Barton would cherish a portrait of his commander-in-chief as a token of Eichholtz's appreciation for sponsoring his Boston sojourn. It is also quite likely that while in Boston Stuart confided in Eichholtz that one of his major portraits of Washington hung in the home of Lancastrian, Alexander Scott. As you know-though the work of Ellen Miles, scholar of the work of America's premier portrait painter of the Early Republic, Gilbert Stuart,--Stuart's Vaughn-type portrait of Washington is one of his most famous. Stuart made many copies of the Vaughn portrait, one of which was for Lancastrian Alexander Scott, who resided on the second block of North Duke Street, Lancaster, one block from the Eichholtz residence. At some point after returning to Lancaster from Boston, Eichholtz no doubt visited the home of Scott and made his copy of Stuart's painting. I believe it is likely that he painted it as early as 1810, but certainly with a few years of that date. I base my conviction on several observations. The canvas is of the type frequently cited as having been used by Eichholtz. It is a rough, rather coarse weave and consists of a sewn-together piece of fabric. The stretchers are almost precisely as described by Theodor Siegl in his essay on Eichholtz's techniques in Rebecca Beal's 1969 work "Jacob Eichholtz, 1776-1842, Portrait Painter of Pennsylvania". They are not mitered, about 2-5/8" wide, and deeply planed on the inner edge. The underpainting seems to be of a vermillion hue, known on several of his works. The flesh tones and the figure itself are handled in a manner consistent with his early work and pre-dates his more accomplished and sophisticated work from the 1820s-1830s. Finally, the frame is right out of his common choice of frames. Although we do not know the frame's maker, the frame bares evidence of former comer decorations consistent with the frames found today on many of his works. LancasterHistory.org is pleased to be the caretakers of almost 100 of Eichholtz's works, the largest collection in any museum. Based on my knowledge of each of those works, my extensive study of his work as part of my doctoral dissertation on the artist, and based on my exposure to countless other paintings by Eichholtz as curator of a major retrospective of his work in 2003, I am as certain as I have ever been, that this is the work of Jacob Eichholtz, portrait painter of Pennsylvania. Thomas R. Ryan, Ph.D., President & CEO Lancaster County Historical Society & President James Buchanan's Wheatland. This painting is listed in Rebecca Beal's 1969 work "Jacob Eichholtz, 1776-1842, Portrait Painter of Pennsylvania" page 245, # 855. Never before offered at auction, from a prominent Lancaster County Family. Canvas measures 29-1/2" x 24", in a gilt molded frame 35-1/2" x 31-3/4" overall. Haziza has spent years finding new ways to use color, metal powders and sculpting techniques to bring out the inner fire of acrylic and breathe life and emotion into every piece he makes. This large, stunning piece is an excellent example of his finest work. CIRCA: 20th Century. DIMENSIONS: H: 19" x W: 9" x D: 5". CONDITION: Vintage condition. Some marks on lucite.
