Note: This is a version of the earliest known painted view of Birkenhead and the River Mersey, looking from Holt Hill, Tranmere over Tranmere Pool and Birkenhead Priory, attributed to Charles Eyes (c. 1745-1803). Other versions of this painting are in the collections of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and Williamson Art Gallery & Museum, Birkenhead. The latter is dated to 1767. Condition:
Scattered retouching throughout, the largest area of which measures 4 1/2" x 4 1/2, to clouds in upper center. Negligible abrasion to lower right quadrant, near the border. Frame with scratches and losses to paint.
