SPEAR. Angola 1850-1907 iron leather cotton and indigo. Hand wrought iron spear with notched leaf blade. Shaft is iron wrapped in strips of indigo dyed cotton with a raw hide grip laced over. Imperfections. 41 1/2''l. Collected by Reverend William E. Ray and his wife while they were missionaries in Portuguese West Africa now Angola 1881-1907. Condition-- rust overall and area of silver spray paint on shaft. Condition reports are available on all items. FOUR UNATTRIBUTED AFRICAN SPEARS 20th century, each spear consists of a socketed iron blade having a central ridge on either side; the blade's socket fits on a short wooden shaft that in turn accepts a socketed iron tip. Three of the spears have sinew or hide edge sheaths on their blades.
