STAFF OFFICER'S SWORD. Unmarked brass guard with ''A.O.H.'' and wire-wrapped grip nickel-plated scabbard. Sword and scabbard have successive s/n 8684 and 8685. 29 3/4''l. blade. The Ancient Order of Hibernians is an Irish fraternal organization started in New York in 1836. Its goal was to protect Irish Catholics from the wave of anti-Irish and anti-Catholic sentiments in mid 19th-century America. Leather grip deteriorating wear nickel plating on scabbard moderately worn.

The ricasso is marked M.C. Lilley & Co Columbus, Ohio. Sword measures approx. 38 1/2" overall, blade is approx. 31 3/4". Blade has a slight bend. Tip is pointed. US WWII Theater-Made Squadron Flag VMA-214 Black Sheep Theater-made flag measures 35 x 45.5'' white parachute silk black felt border with squadron patch in center. The 12 x 14'' center is nicely done. In August 1943 a group of twenty-seven young men under the leadership of Major Gregory ''Pappy'' Boyington (who was later awarded the Medal of Honor) were joined together to form the original ''Blacksheep'' of VMF-214. Major Boyington had just returned from a year's tour in China as a member of the American Volunteer Group the ''Flying Tigers'' and had been credited with multiple kills of Japanese aircraft. Condition: Excellent.
