The medal was instituted on 12 August 1857 by Emperor Napoleon III to ‘honour with a special distinction the soldiers who fought under the flag of France in the great wars of 1792 to 1815’ and awarded to survivors of the wars of Revolution and Empire some 42 years after their end. It was designed by the great medalist Désiré-Albert Barre and produced by the Imperial Mint in Paris.

17TH C. PORTRAIT OF A STANDING FEMALE SAINT Continental, probably Portuguese, she is standing on top of a wave with an angel at front, in robe with lace edged cape and mantle, her hands clasped in prayer, her hair coiffed under the mantle, mounted on an octagonal wooden base. 4 1/4" figure, 5 3/8" tall overall. Yellowed, shrinkage cracks, stain on back of head.

ST. PHILOMENA CARVED ALTAR FIGURE, SIGNED "HK 1929"A large and beautifully detailed polychrome painted wooden santo of St. Philomena, incised "HK 1929" to the base. St. Philomena, the patron saint of babies, infants, and youth, is here represented with the typical symbols of her martyrdom: holding an arrow, an anchor tied around her neck.
Measures 50 1/2" x 12 1/2" 12 1/2".
Provenance : From a Kansas City area collection, previously acquired from a church in Minnesota.
Condition
There are two holes drilled to the top of the figure's head and a few small holes drilled to the upper back, likely used for fastening the piece in its original location. There is one chip to the bottom of the robe. General rubbing and wear.
