One of the many trips in Europe he would take throughout his lifetime. He directed the Eastman-Bolton Gallery from 1926-1938, a decorative-design firm that he cofounded. In 1931 he was elected president of the Cleveland Society of Artists. The following year he organized the city's first artist's Curb Market to stimulate sales of local artists' work. During the 1930's and 1940's his paintings appeared in solo exhibtions in Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachussetts. FRIEDRICH MECKSEPER, GERMANY (B. 1936), UNTITLED, COLOR LITHOGRAPH, 18 1/2"H X 23 1/2"W (SIGHT)Friedrich Meckseper, Germany, (b. 1936) untitled, color lithograph signed bottom middle From AskArt: The German painter, designer, drawer, and draftsman Friedrich Meckseper was born in 1936 in Bremen, Germany. He spent his childhood in Stuttgart and did an apprenticeship as a mechanic at Robert Bosch GmbH from 1952 until 1955. In the year he started at Bosch, he began his course of studies, first at the State Academy for Visual Arts in Stuttgart under Professor Karl Rössing. He continued his studies at the College for Visual Arts in Berlin from 1957 until 1959 under Professor Wolf Hoffmann. Meckseper's first engravings were completed during this time. In 1963, he received the German Rome Prize from Villa Massimo; in 1965, he received a culture circle stipend from the Association of German Industry; in 1970, he was honored with the prize of the 7th Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo. He was influenced in his artistic works by Anton Heyoer, Bosch, Leonardo, Saul Steinberg, and Hamaguchi, among others. He created oilprints, engravings, collages, and objects which produce a mysterious tension in the observer. The minimalistic arrangement of objects in his works was supported by his technical precision, and the gears and springs one finds in his works belie his interest in technology. Moreover in 1972, he designed and built a steamboat, and he crossed the Alps many times in a hot air balloon. He was a guest professor at the comprehensive college in Wuppertal in 1977 and 1978 and took over the engraving class from 1977 until 1979. Meckseper was honored at the 6th Norwegian International Print Biennale in Fredrikstad in 1982 and received the prize of the First and Second International Kochi Triennial Exibition of Prints in Japan in 1990 and 1993. From 1961 until 1984, Meckseper lived and worked in the artist colony of Worpswede. He then moved to Berlin, where he still lives and works. color lithograph Dimensions: 18 1/2"H x 23 1/2"W (sight)

Richard Lindner was born in Hamburg, Germany. His mother Mina Lindner was American and born in New York as daughter of German parents. In 1905 the family moved to Nuremberg, where Lindner's mother was owner of a custom-fitting corset business and Richard Lindner grew up and studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (Arts and Crafts School), now the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg. From 1924 to 1927 he lived in Munich and studied there from 1925 at the Kunstakademie. In 1927 Lindner moved to Berlin and stayed there until 1928, when he returned to Munich to become art director of a publishing firm. He remained in Munich until 1933, when he was forced to flee to Paris. Once in Paris, Lindner became politically engaged, sought contact with French artists and earned his living as a commercial artist. He was interned when World War II broke out in 1939 and later served in the French Army. In 1941, Lindner moved to the United States and worked in New York City as an illustrator of books and magazines. There he made contact with New York artists and German emigrants such as Albert Einstein, Marlene Dietrich, and Saul Steinberg. In 1948, Lindner became an American citizen. In 1952, Lindner started teaching at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn. In 1957 Lindner received the William and Norma Copley Foundation-Award. In 1965, he became Guest Professor at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg, Germany. His paintings at this time used the sexual symbolism of advertising and investigated definitions of gender roles in the media. In 1967, Lindner moved to Yale University School of Art and Architecture, New Haven. Richard Lindner died in 1978. He was buried at Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
