Stevenson A. May [American/Pennsylvania mid 19th c.] oil on canvas landscape painting of a church with a high spire and graveyard signed l.l. "A.M.S. 1853" and verso a Pennsylvania Academy label with the title "Scene of Gray's Elegy Artist A.M. Stevenson". 19.25"x27.5" "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" is a poem by Thomas Gray completed in 1750 and first published in 1751. The poem's origins are unknown but it was partly inspired by Gray's thoughts following the death of the poet Richard West in 1742.

Stevenson attended the University of Oklahoma before moving to Paris where he exhibited in numerous European galleries. In 1962, Stevenson's work was exhibited alongside Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Moskowitz, Robert Indiana, George Segal, Jim Dine, Peter Agostini, James Rosenquist, Wayne Thiebaud and Tom Wesselmann at the Sidney Janis Gallery as part of their "New Realists" exhibit. He was good friends with Andy Warhol and starred in some of Warhol's early art films.
