WALTER STEWART, REVOLUTIONARY OFFICER, ALS, 1793 Walter Stewart (1756-1796, Officer in the Continental Army, after the war a merchant in Philadelphia and major General of Militia) ALS, German Town, October 13, 1793, to John Barclay (1749-1824, Revolutionary War soldier, Mayor of Philadelphia, 1791-'3, President of the Bank of Pennsylvania, founded in 1793); 1 1/2 pp. 4to, signed twice by Stewart and apparently docketed by Barclay. Learning that his nephew, who handles his business has fallen ill (presumably with yellow fever which was then epidemic), Stewart asks for some grace from the bank because of large debts coming due at once.

Genl. Anthony Wayne (1749-1796, commander of Continental troops at Stony Point, for which he was awarded a gold medal), 2 pp. 4to, 10 1/4 x 7 7/8 in., with integral cover sheet, docketed in Wayne's handwriting. Introduces a Dr. Ridgely, who carries the letter; punning comments on the services of a barber named Benjamine; finishing, "I congratulate all of you on your happy escape from Death and the Devil in the Buff Yerkin."

ARCHIVE OF STEWART JAMES CORRESPONDENCE AND MANUSCRIPTS...James, Stewart. Archive of Stewart James Correspondence and Manuscripts. Spanning 1980 - 1995 and including six or more typewritten manuscripts for effects devised by James (Bermuda Triangles, Half Open Omen, Kardtu, etc., some with manuscript corrections by James), correspondence related to various publications, magicians (Charles T. Jordan, Michael Close, M.F. Zens, Howard Lyons, and dozens more), and magic tricks (including the Automated Sefalajia), and associated letters from James's associates. Lyons (Patterson) and Ray Massecar. Many lengthy carbons of Busby's replies included, along with clippings, copies of articles and associated information. Over 100 pages, neatly organized. Reclusive and enigmatic, Stewart James (1908-1996) was also one of the twentieth century's most prolific inventors of magic tricks and principles. He collaborated with Busby on a version of his miniature spirit cabinet known as the Automated Sefalaljia (see Lot 63).
