HENRY WELLS & WILLIAM FARGO
HENRY WELLS & WILLIAM FARGO SIGNED STOCK CERTOriginal stock certificate hand-signed by Henry Wells and William G. Fargo. 12" x 8-1/4". Engraved stock certificate is for 46 shares in the American Express Company. It was issued on January 2, 1865, signed by the same men who founded and operated the iconic Wells Fargo & Co. What makes this particular certificate special is its original issuee -- Alex Holland, the treasurer of American Express. At a capitalization of $500 per share, his 46 shares were worth a massive $23,000. (In today's dollars, this certificate represented a fortune of around $360,000.) Holland has also countersigned the certificate. U.S. revenue stamp is perfectly placed upper left. There is a thin tear, repaired to near invisibility with archival tape on verso, running through the center. This is a "blue chip" collectible in all respects.
