Birger Sandzén (Swedish, 1871-1954)
Sven Birger Sandzén, born 5 February 1871 in Blidsberg, Sweden, was an accomplished landscape artist and art educator. At the age of ten, Sandzén joined the Skara Cathedral School to study art. Upon graduating in 1890, he studied for a short period at the University of Lund before moving to Stockholm. In 1894, he moved to Paris to complete his painting studies, where he studied under Edmond Aman-Jean. Later that year, he moved to Lindsborg, Kansas to teach at Bethany College, where he remained faculty for fifty-two years. In 1940, Sandzén was recognized by the Swedish Government for his contributions to cultural relations between the U.S. and Sweden, awarding him both the Order of Vasa and the Order of the North Star. He also received honorary doctorates from the Midland Lutheran College, the University of Nebraska, and Kansas State University. Sandzén found inspiration in the Smoky Hill River Valley of central Kansas, and many of his paintings feature landscapes of the American Southwest. Though oil was his most used medium, Sandzén’s works also include prints and watercolors. He died 22 June 1954 at the age of 83 in Lindsborg, Kansas. Many of his works reside at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery at Bethany College, established in 1957.

Note: Swedish porphyry is a rare material which is predominately quarried in Alvadalen, Sweden. This quarry was discovered in the early 18th century and evolved in to a commercial enterprise in 1788. Owned by the Royal Family in the 19th century and used for creating official gifts for foreign dignitaries or as tokens of royal favor. Porphyry objects were well regarded by the Royal Family and especially King Karl IV Johann who reigned from 1818 to 1844. It is a very dense stone that only a well equipped sculptor can master, making it a highly coveted stone. This campana urn shaped model was designed by Louis Masreliez, an artist employed by the porphyry works. A pair of identical urns were owned by Princess Sofia Albertina (1753-1829) and were acquired by the National Museum in Sweden as designed by Masreliez. Louis Masreliez (d. 1806) was a painter and designer and a leading decorator of the late Gustavian period. He was educated in Paris, Bologna and Rome, before returning to Sweden in 1783 at the request of Gustaf III. He was responsible for the designs of several Royal residences, including the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Tullgarn and Drottningholm.

The outer scale on the outer circumference ranges from 4000 feet to 9700 feet in 10 foot intervals, the underside stamped Made in Sweden, together with serial # D849 and U.S.A. Patent dates Sept. 9th 1919 and April 13th 1926. Retaining its original leather fitted case with carrying strap, overall wear. Case dimensions, 3" high x 4.25" diameter.
