PAIR VA CHARCOAL PROFILE PORTRAITS,
PAIR VA CHARCOAL PROFILE PORTRAITS, ATTRIB. CHARLES BUR...Companion pair of charcoal profile portraits on paper, unsigned but attributed to Charles Burton (1782 - after 1847) depicting Captain David Evans Moore (1797 - 1875) and his wife Elizabeth M. Harvey Moore (1809 - 1888) of Lexington County, Virginia. Sitter names inscribed en verso. Housed in simple (later) wooden frames. Sight - 5" H x 4 1/4" W. Framed - 7" H x 6 1/4" W. History: The male subject, Andrew Moore, hailed from an important family. He was the son of Senator Andrew Moore (1752 - 1821) and Sarah McDowell Moore. Andrew Moore was an American lawyer and politician from Lexington, Virginia. He rose to the rank of captain in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, seeing action at Saratoga. After the war he was eventually commissioned a major general in the Virginia militia. He was a delegate to the Virginia convention that ratified the United States Constitution in 1788. He represented Virginia in both the U.S. House (1789-97, 1804) and the U.S. Senate (1804-1809). His son David Evans Moore (the subject) was the Commonwealth Attorney for Rockbridge County, Virginia and is buried in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. Artist information (Courtesy of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts): London-born Charles Burton (1782-after 1847) received some training at the Royal Academy before immigrating to New York around 1817. Once in America, he abandoned oils for graphite and watercolor, and began traveling to find work between New York and Virginia. His works, which are rarely signed, are typically skilled, detailed, and finely shadowed, with the subject nearly always depicted in a "Fancy" painted chair. Burton's portraits are in several museum collections including The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center at Colonial Williamsburg. C. 1860'S J.E.B. STUART CONFEDERATE
C. 1860'S J.E.B. STUART CONFEDERATE GENERAL PHOTOThis is an original from-life period photograph of J.E.B. Stuart, C.S.A. General circa 1860’s during the American Civil War. James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart (1833-1864) was a celebrated Confederate cavalry commander of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. This photograph exhibits General Jeb Stuarts wearing knee-high boots, gauntlet gloves, dress sash, while clutching his saber and ostrich plume adorned iconic hat. Stuart served under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. He fought at the Peninsula Campaign, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg and was mortally wounded May 1864 at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, Virginia. This photograph is on a hard stock card, referred to as a “salt print” photograph by Heritage Auctions. Heritage sold a near identical photograph of Jeb Stuart for $2,000 (w/ bp) in June 2015 in poor faded condition with an irregularly trimmed edge (listed with a pre-sale estimate of $2,400-$3,600). Our example is well kept with a nice clear image, mounted to photographic board and protected in a plastic split. The back is marked in graphite pencil JEB Stuart CDV #461 and priced $1,250 (a price likely from circa early 2000’s). Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The piece (without the plastic slip) measures 3 7/8” by 2.5”. Plastic slip is 5 1/8” by 3”.

DEAN ELLIS (1920 - 2009) "ROBERT E. LEE"Dean Ellis (American, 1920 - 2009) "Robert E. Lee" Signed middle right. Original Oil painting on Masonite.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for The Shapers of America series issued in 1987.
Distinguished in family, in presence, and in character, he seemed to have every virtue. His father was the famous "Lighthorse Harry" Lee of Revolutionary fame. His wife was the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. He presided over a magnificent Arlington estate. He went through West Point without a single demerit and served with distinction in the Mexican War. He was -- almost inevitably -- Superintendent of West Point Academy. Robert E. Lee was, indeed, an ardent patriot, devoted to the Union. But when Beauregard fired on Fort Sumter, Lee made the only decision he could, siding with his home state and the cause of its people. But, throughout the war, he was free of any private hostility. He referred to the Union troops as "those people," not the enemy. As Commander in Chief of the Army of Northern Virginia, he proved himself a brilliant combat general and skillful strategist, loved by subordinates and soldiers alike. "I would go through Hell for General Lee," Stonewall Jackson said. Against odds sometimes of two to one, Lee repeatedly took the offensive, and shattered one Union Army after another. "It is well war is so terrible," he said, "else we should get too fond of it." When he was forced to surrender, Lee bade farewell to those who had been "faithful to the last." "Take satisfaction in the consciousness of duty faithfully performed," he said. After his retirement, Lee was appointed President of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia.

NEWELL CONVERS (NC) WYETH, AMERICAN
NEWELL CONVERS (NC) WYETH, AMERICAN (1882-1945), N.C. WYETH AND HIS GRANDSON, EXHIBITION POSTER, 23 1/2"H X 19 1/4"W, 25 1/4"H X 21 1/4"W (FRAME)Newell Convers (NC) Wyeth, American, (1882-1945) N.C. Wyeth and His Grandson, exhibition poster Signed lower right by Jamie Wyeth. A Legacy, Terra Museum of American Art, Chicago. Biography from the Archives of askART: The following is from The New York Times online edition, 1/25/2001: N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945), America's greatest illustrator as well as an accomplished easel painter, dedicated his career to depicting American subjects in a fresh, energetic manner uninfluenced by European art - "true, solid American subjects - nothing foreign about them," as he put it in 1903. Reflecting times in which unconditional loyalty to country was taken for granted and the American flag was a sacred symbol of freedom, N.C. executed works that encapsulated those very American qualities. As television anchorman Tom Brokaw points out in his catalogue essay, the patriarch of the Wyeth clan "was a man of the first half of the century, roughly from Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, when Americans seemed to be framed in red, white and blue bunting and the background music was "Yankee Doodle Dandy" or Kate Smith singing "God Bless America". N.C.'s lifelong veneration for America's historical traditions, growing out of his New England heritage and strengthened by his Chadds Ford residency in the history-rich Brandywine Valley, manifested itself in idealized, heroic images of such larger-than-life personalities as Paul Revere, George Washington, Nathan Hale, Thomas Jefferson, John Paul Jones and Abraham Lincoln. He painted stalwart views of Stonewall Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant and action-packed renditions of Civil War combat, suggesting valor and patriotism on both sides. Commissioned by the government during World War I to create recruiting and propaganda posters, Wyeth had an output that ranged from images of brave doughboys helping their wounded mates, in "WWI Poster" (1918), to dramatic paintings of terrified Huns surrendering to gun-toting American infantrymen in Kamerad! (1919). Along with other Americans, N.C. was horrified by stories of atrocities committed by the German Army. He responded with vivid, impassioned images, such as "The Abdication of Attila" (1917), done for Life magazine, that suggested that Kaiser Wilhelm had outstripped the infamous Attila the Hun as the epitome of "supreme evil" and the "arch-tyrant" of history. Pondering an offer from the War Department to become an official artist at the Western Front, Wyeth remarked, "I wouldn't mind a crack at a Boche or two, and would be tickled to death if I could disembowel their divine leader...." Responding with equal patriotic fervor to the challenge of World War II, Wyeth underscored the determination of Uncle Sam and our citizen army in Amateurs at War: The American Soldier in Action (1943) and the heroism of GIs in the Pacific in Marines Landing on the Beach (1944). He recognized the contributions of farmers to the Allied effort in Soldiers of the Soil (1942), an illustration for a Brown and Bigelow calendar, and in another calendar work, Our Emblem (1944), reflected the symbolism of the American eagle protecting a tranquil New England hamlet. Wyeth's colorful Buy War Bonds (1942), featuring an assertive Uncle Sam clutching Old Glory and urging on planes overhead and infantrymen on the ground, helped the Treasury Department sell a lot of bonds to back the war effort. One poster sold $200,000 worth of bonds, while another took in $1 million, according to Wyeth biographer David Michaelis. In a tempera-on-panel, The War Letter (1941) he depicted his parents on the bucolic grounds of their home in Needham, Mass. As his mother reads a letter from the morning mail and a newspaper describing overseas developments lies next to her, his father looks on. It is a poignant vignette reflecting keen home front concern about unfolding wartime events. To N.C. Wyeth, the choice between good and evil, freedom and tyranny in both World Wars was clear. His characteristically bold, forceful images, imbued with old-fashioned patriotism, helped spur an embattled America on to victory in both conflicts. exhibition poster Dimensions: 23 1/2"H x 19 1/4"W, 25 1/4"H x 21 1/4"W (frame)
