The artist, likley Miss Josephine Burrows Ruble (1904-1979) studied at the Sergent and Elmira Colleges for women, where this work was likely a student effort. It appears she acquired an earlier canvas and painted over it. She later became a missionary and an educator, settling in Newport, Tennessee.
