FULL BODY COPPER SULKY WEATHERVANE OF "AMERICAN GIRL" H...attributed to J.W. Fiske & Co., circa 1880, copper with molded zinc head, striding horse pulling a sulky and rider, separately cast and molded reigns and tack, mounted on modern H form stand, overall 24 x 44-1/2 x 12 in.

Note: "American Girl" was a standardbred racehorse born in 1862 in Peekskill. Though born "weak-jointed, loose-gaited," and "the worst-looking, crooked-legged filly that was ever foaled in Peekskill," she eventually became a well-known racer and prominent example of the breed, valued at $25,000 and winning 52 races over the course of her career. After her tragic death during a race in 1875, J.W. Fiske & Co., among other manufacturers, was inspired to create a weathervane after her image.

very fine overall condition, retains a fine richly colored verdigris surface, probable bullet hole through rider's back/shoulder, visible solder at neck, mane, tail, and joints, some separations at seams, crack and solder repair to one wheel with later crack

FOLK ART THOROUGHBRED TROTTER AND SULKY HOOKED RUGThoroughbred trotter and sulky hooked rug, circa 1880-1900, from Sunbury, Ohio region. Rug is wool, hooked on Monk cloth. Medium sage green and light blue mottle background, bordered by dark green and gray. Bay brown colored horse pulls a red sulky and jockey in blue and gray silks. Very unique item in terms of subject and scale.
Rug has been outfitted with custom four-part stretching frame and attached with velcro. Measures 4 feet by 7 feet.
Condition
Rug is in very good condition. There is a small hole and minor edge and surface wear in two small areas.

Detroit Michigan" stenciled in yellow letters on the front of the trough, iron supports on each side with the name of the Hoosier Drill Co. Richmond Ind. on one side and patent dates 1863 - 1878 on the other iron support. 17"H x 53 1/2"W x 16 1/8"D. 4th quarter of 19th century. Provenance - Yates estate, Greeneville, Tennessee.
