  Two Japanese satsuma vases, both polychrome and gilt, cobalt grounds with gilt flowers: one handled pear form, shaped cartouches of people visiting on a verandah, mounted general with retainers on a road, base with gold mark for Kinkozan, 5-1/8 in., repaired neck ; one globular form, cartouches of performers in a garden, draped shell or onigiri with interior scene of boys enjoying a summer evening, 3-3/4 in., excellent condition . "Shi Shin (in Chinese Shih Chin) is one of the 108 bandit heroes of the famous Chinese novel "Suikoden" (translated by Pearl Buck under the title "All Men are Brothers". His nickname was "the Nine dragoned" because he was tattooed with an elaborate design of nine dragons. He began life as the son of a wealthy landowner in the village named after his family. Here he is shown relaxing on a summer evening before he began his career as a bandit."
