Early Christian Leaders Billy
Early Christian Leaders Billy Sunday & S. Parkes Cadman Autographs Lot of 3 including Billy Sunday signed photograph; and S. Parkes Cadman TLsS (2). Photograph of Sunday with inscription to his friend Horgan(?) center with W.A. Sunday / Psalm 34 and Mch(?) - April 1921 on right. (possibly Michigan?) Slight water stain along left third. William Ashley ''Billy'' Sunday (1862-1935) was born in Iowa. His father was died of disease in the Civil War just five weeks after he was born. Mother and sons lived with her parents for a while but eventually Billy and his brother were sent to Soldiers' Orphan's homes. As a young man Billy's physical athleticism gained notice and he was signed to the defending National League champion Chicago White Stockings. He played ball for seven years before committing his life to Christian ministry. He used elements of the game and amateur competition to publicize and highlight his ministry. Billy Sunday became such a popular preacher by the first quarter of the 20th century that he could demand that a community build an auditorium for his meetingsand he might spend a month in a town conducting meetings every day. The lot also contains two typed notes signed by S. Parkes Cadman one is a short letter to ''Mr. Little'' dated 16 March 1925 regarding the 6th commandment the other a response to a request for an autograph dated 5 Jan. 1932. Samuel Parkes Cadman (1864-1936) a contemporary of Billy Sunday's did not choose the traveling revival meeting format to reach out to the masses although his ministry attracted large crowds in New York City. By the 1920s he decided to use the new medium of radio to reach beyond the city and about the same time he began a daily newspaper column. Condition: Earlier Cadman letter with some toning small water stain along fold. Short note with ghost of another signature lower left.
