The nocturn free from tears or hole. The evening landscape with two tiny tears in left hand tree, varnish discoloured with age. Undisturbed in what are probably the original early Victorian ornate giltwood and composition frames, with loss, of grimy appearance. Light overall craquelure.

It is displayed in an exceptional hand made frame of later vintage.The Dream Gardner is a longstanding dealer specializing in only the finest examples of original Maxfield Parrish illustration. This appears to be a representation of the grounding of the USS Frigate "Philadelphia", off the approach to the harbor of Tripoli, Lebanon, while pursuing the Barbary pirates in what became known as the first Barbary War, on Oct. 31, 1803. She was captured, but ultimately destroyed by Lt. Stepehen Decatur, on Feb. 16, 1804, in a daring night-time raid, the first action of the USMC ("to the Halls of Tripoli".)
