PAUL HOWARD MANSHIP, (AMERICAN,
PAUL HOWARD MANSHIP, (AMERICAN, 1885-1966), SUSANNA, GILT BRONZE, HEIGHT: 5 IN., HEIGHT WITH BASE: 8 IN.PAUL HOWARD MANSHIP, (American, 1885-1966) Susanna, gilt bronze inscribed P. Manship on base height: 5 in., height with base: 8 in. Provenance: A Hingham, Massachusetts Lady. Other Notes: Paul Manship was strongly influenced by the classical forms he studied while at the American Academy in Rome, melding these themes with his own modern aesthetic. This small figure is likely inspired by the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders. According to the Book of Daniel, Susanna, a young wife, was bathing in her garden when approached by two elder men. She rejected their advances, and, the two men, angered at being spurned, accused her of adultery, a crime punishable by death. However, virtue prevailed, as the men were questioned, discovered to have lied, and put to death themselves. The story of Susanna is one depicted frequently in the Western tradition, including by Lorenzo Lotto, Guido Reni, Artemisia Gentileschi, Rubens, Tintoretto, and others. Manship's figure of Susanna relates closely to his marble work of the same subject in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. Condition: Condition: Uneven patina, with gilding worn in areas, most significantly on figure's left arm. around base, and on raised knee.
