Will of Revolutionary War Hero
Will of Revolutionary War Hero Thomas Key Thomas Key (1750-1821) settled in the Edgefield S.C. area. He served as a Captain in Col. LeRoy Hammond's regiment during the Revolutionary War. An historical marker at Horn's Creek notes that Key "...Attacked a party of Tories under the command of Captain Clark. The Tories were defeated their Captain killed and the entire company captured and paroled." Most of his life was spent as a Southern planter plus he invented a device to improve the movement of water wheels.Included in the lot is a manuscript will of Thomas Key (18 Jan. 1750 - 6 Nov. 1821) 4pp 8 x 13 in. Mill Creek District of Edgefield South Carolina 3 July 1820; Witnesses: Roger Williams William Purssell John Kirby; marked "True Copy." In part: First I ... bequeath unto my well beloved wife Elizabeth the sum of two thousand five hundred dollars to be paid out of my Estate by my Executors which is to be entirely at her disposal also three negroes (to wit) Titus Amy and Matilda and their increase a carriage and pair of horses and household & kitchen furniture she may think necessary to take during her natural life and which at her decease shall be equally divided among my children. Also included in the lot are 1857 and 1861 surveys for Thomas D. Key probably a grandson and a sketch of Key property with neighbors indicated no date given. Condition: Will is generally good with expected toning and folds. Surveys are a bit rough as they appear to be working copies folded and unfolded many times.

Diminutive inlaid kneehole desk, highly figured satinwood top with banded light and dark string inlay above dovetailed frieze drawer, each side with three dovetailed drawers flanking central bay with door and compartment behind, white oak secondary, British, 19th century, 28-3/4 x 31 x 21 in. Some original hand wrought "T" nails, later ogee bracket feet and skirt, some interior and back rebuilding, some resurfaced areas. Private Collection, Tryon, North Carolina.
