William Sidney Mount (American
William Sidney Mount (American 1807-1868) "The Storm" pencil on paper initialed "W.S.M" dated "July 8.68" and titled lower center 6 in. x 4 in. attractively matted and framed. Provenance: Childs Gallery Boston 1979; from the artist to Mrs. William Jones Seabury Long Island New York; to her grandson Andrew Oliver New York and Boston 1978; thence to Belle Cheniere. Note: This drawing depicts a post-Civil War mother taking shelter under a tree for the duration of the impending storm where she comforts her two children and their dog. The mother's spreading skirts suggest the stability of her mission a point belied by her and her daughter's anxious expressions which are mirrored by that of the dog.
