C.C. GIERS MASONIC PHOTO ALBUM,
C.C. GIERS MASONIC PHOTO ALBUM, INC. ANDREW JOHNSONPhotographic Album belonging to Nashville photographer C. C. Giers, containing approximately 110 CDVs of members of Nashville's York Rite Commandery of Knights Templar, including President Andrew Johnson. Album cover embossed "Sir Knight Chas. C. Giers Nashville Commandery No. 1 at KT " (Note: Giers was listed in some early documents as "Charles" and "Carl" alternately). The vast majority of the images bear the backstamp of Giers, one of Nashville's most important early photographers. Nearly all CDVs have a pencil inscription beneath identifying them (however, these may not be period inscriptions and may not be entirely accurate); some include photographic negative numbers. This Reconstruction era album contains likenesses of some of Middle Tennessee's most prominent citizens including Civil War veterans and politicians. Most recognizable is Andrew Johnson, who joined the Nashville Commandery in 1859 and was elected President of the United States in 1865. Among those pictured are Col. Lucius Polk (erroneously identified as "Genl Polk" ) , George Dickel (of the whiskey business), Dr. Henry Sheffield, John Frizzell, George N. Wells, Robert Bransford, Dr. George Blackie, Sumner Kirkpatrick, W. F. Foster, Capt. William Stockell, John B. Norris, R.H. Howell, C.W. Peden, H.L. Blanton, Thompson Anderson, Frank Stiener (2 identical images), J. M. Anderson, Dr. W.H. Morgan, H.L. Claiborne, J. B. Clemmons, Capt. Geo. Dashiel, Maj. E.F. Falconet, Ed Hicks II, Edwin Fields, Morton B. Howell, Dan Hillman, Jonathan Huntingdon, J.B. Hamblin, Daniel Hillman, George Jenkins, J.C. Warner, etc. Carl C. (C.C.) Giers himself is pictured, and there are two additional cabinet card images of men wearing Masonic aprons, likely the Grand Masters. Album - 11" x 8 3/8". Circa 1869. NOTE: A list of all identification captions is available on request. Provenance: the estate of Giers descendant Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
Condition:
Album Cover has separated from internal pages, with spine and front cover detached from back cover. Pages have foxing, handling grime and some scattered small edge tears. The images themselves are in generally good condition with light discoloration and some scattered spots and stains.

PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A EUROPEAN
PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A EUROPEAN NOBLEMAN, FULL LENGTHContinental school, possibly Spanish, oil on canvas life-sized portrait of a nobleman depicted standing full length in an interior setting against a draped background and red carpet. The subject has grey hair and facial hair and is attired in an ermine-trimmed embroidered short cloak or cape emblazoned with a red Crusaders or Templar cross, an ornate gold livery collar or chain of office around his upper shoulders with central griffin, black leather pants and boots, with his right hand on a short sword and his left hand resting on the handle of a sword visible at his hip. Housed in a modern carved gilt Hudson River style frame from Bennett Galleries, Knoxville. First quarter of 19th century or earlier. Sight: 81 1/2" H x 35 1/2" W. Framed: 92" H x 45 1/2" W. Note: The gold livery collar is similar to those conferred to the Chivalric Order the Jar/Griffin, founded by Ferdinand I of Aragon in 1403. The jar of lilies links symbolize the Virgin Mary while the griffin can be interpreted as a symbol of war against the infidel. This painting may depict Ferdinand I or one of his Castilian descendants as the original Crest of Castile and Leon featured a golden griffin. This crest fell out of use in the 15th century as the griffin was replaced by a lion.
Condition:
Painting is in overall good condition with areas of retouch and later varnishing visible throughout under UV light inspection, primarily to the background. Canvas is lined, and stretcher appears to be contemporary.

AMES FRATERNAL SKULL POMMEL
AMES FRATERNAL SKULL POMMEL SWORDAmes, Chicopee Knights Templars Skull Pommel Sword and Scabbard, pre-Civil War.
An extremely rare and fine Ames, Chicopee sword of the Knights Templar Masonic organization, with beautifully detailed skull pommel, and crossed thigh bones guard, with a beautifully etched blade, including the owner’s name, a compass and right angle symbol, a Maltese cross, and two Patriarchal crosses. The name on the blade is S.B. Goddard and the ricasso is clearly marked “Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass.” The grip is of facetted dark wood. The blade is straight, oval in cross section, and double edged. The scabbard is steel with brass mounts. The hilt is brass that was silver plated. Dimensions: 36.25 inches long overall. Blade is 29 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $55.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
Condition:
The sword is in excellent condition overall, although the silver plating on the hilt is mostly worn away. The blade is excellent, with all of the etching very clear and crisp. There are a few very minor stains on the lower blade, but no rust or pitting at all. The scabbard has two minor dents. It appears to have been gilt plated, but most of the gilding is gone. The scabbard tip or drag is very handsomely made, appearing to have been made of heavy sheet brass. One of the brass hanging rings is missing. The screw on the drag is missing. One of the thigh bones that form the crossguard is slightly bent.Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders. A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS ENGRAVED SILVER
A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS ENGRAVED SILVER PLATE MOUNTED CARVE...A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS ENGRAVED SILVER PLATE MOUNTED CARVED WOOD WALKING STICK, COMMEMORATING THE BATTLE OF SAN JACINTO, BELONGING TO ARCHIBALD ST. CLAIR RUTHVEN, DATED 1841, of tapering faux grained natural form with silver plate capped truncated branches and pierced silver stars suspending a blue tasseled silk cord, surmounted by a conforming cap enclosing a "JR" monogram above sides with inscription "FROM. / A.S. RUTHVEN. / HOUSTON, TEXAS. / To his father / in Edinburgh, 1841 / Cut from the Battleground of San Jacinto," ending in a conforming circular bronze collar and iron base cap. Note: The Battle of San Jacinto (in present day Harris County, Tx), is considered the decisive battle of the Texas War of Independence (1835-1836) and was fought on April 21, 1836. The Texian Army, led by General Sam Houston, defeated the Mexican Army under General Santa Anna in just eighteen minutes. Provenance: Archibald St. Clair Ruthven (Scottish/Texan 1813-1865) emigrated from Scotland to the United States in 1832 and by 1840 had moved to Houston, Texas. Ruthven was initiated into the first Masonic Lodge for Texas, Holland Lodge No.1, where he progressed rather quickly attaining a variety of offices. Ultimately, he was appointed as Grand Master (1846-1847) followed by Grand Secretary (1848-1861). While serving as Grand Secretary he was able to chronicle an important two volume publication "Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Texas: 1837-1857," which covered the organization's early history as well as records. He was also active in the Knights Templar at New Orleans and later in Houston at the Ruthven Commandery No. 1, so named in his honor. He was well known for his protestations of the annexation of Texas by the United States. In 1855 he and his wife moved to Galveston, where he served as the Texas representative for cotton purchasing of a New York firm and later Powell & Ruthven of Galveston. The success of cotton and his business led him to commission a steamboat in his name. Unfortunately the steamboat was used as a transport vessel during the Civil War and was sunk in 1861. The anchor was later recovered and is displayed in Palestine, Texas. During the war, Ruthven was actively involved in blockade running off the Texas coast. Just before the war ended, he and his wife returned to Scotland where he fell ill with tuberculosis and died on July 24th, 1865. Height: 36.00"
Condition:
Good condition, normal areas of tarnish, minor surface marks and small scratches, some small dings and wear on engraved cap. 13TH C. MEDIEVAL ENGLISH SILVER
13TH C. MEDIEVAL ENGLISH SILVER SEAL TEMPLAR KNIGHTNorthwestern Europe, England, or Byzantium, Medieval period, ca. 13th century CE. A lovely Medieval era 95% silver seal from the time of crusades! This seal would have been worn suspended via the integral suspension loop handle surmounted on the neck of the bell-shaped and fluted stamp. The face of the seal shows a mounted crusader with a horse facing left brandishing a Templar Cross. Artifacts connected with both the Crusades and anything Templar, are exceedingly rare and desirable! Given its small size this was easy to conceal with simple iconography, it is almost certain this was a counter seal or "sigillum secretum." Counter seals were impressed into the verso of the large official seal that was affixed to documents, sealing both sides made detaching the seal more difficult which added a layer of security to sensitive documents. A sigillum secretum was a seal used for private or personal correspondence to indicate it was private and for the eyes of the intended reader only.! Size: 0.48" W x 0.86" H (1.2 cm x 2.2 cm); silver quality: 95%; weight: 10.6 grams.
Provenance: private Boynton Beach, Florida, USA collection; ex-Peter Szuhay collection, London, UK
