It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
This large high-quality heavy patinated bronze was probably manufactured for wealthy Americans, is marked verso "Rev Susse Frs. Ed-is, Paris", with the inscription on the front as the original reading "Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti MDCCXCII". 9 1/2" x 20" x 6"".
