- JAMES NEALE CREAMWARE ARMORIAL PLATE,
JAMES NEALE CREAMWARE ARMORIAL PLATE, CIRCA 1785-1790 DIAMETER: 8 IN. (20.3 CM.)JAMES NEALE CREAMWARE ARMORIAL PLATE, CIRCA 1785-1790, shaped-circular, the center transfer-printed and enriched with the Scottish Clan Chief arms of Grant, above the motto banner "Stand Fast", the border is crested by a crown beneath a mountain aflame, within a brown line rim Dimensions: Diameter: 8 in. (20.3 cm.) Provenance: Gift of Tom Walford, April 2003 From the Collection of Diana Edwards Murnaghan, No. 352 Catalogue note: The Grant motto in full reads 'Stand Fast Craig Elachie' and references an historical event of their distant forebearer, the Norse King Haakon. By tradition, Haakon, surprised by his enemies, rips a tree sapling out of the ground and uses it to successfully hold off his attackers. Simultaneously, he vociferously exhorts his supporters to 'Stand Fast'. The mountain a blaze represents Craig Elachie, the so-called 'Rock of Alarm'. In times of need, a rallying signal fire was lit on the summit. This said, today we mainly recognize this motto as the rallying cry of Grant's Scotch Whiskey. According to Barbara Horn, "Ceramic accounts found among the Sefield Muniments", ECC Transactions, Vol. 18, Part 1, 2002, pp.193-194, the order, placed on April 28, 1774, to James Neale was not purchased until 1785.
