Colonial Documents British
Colonial Documents British Account First is 1p 7 x 11.5 in. Whitehall 20 Oct. 1783. Account of services performed by William North Messenger to the Right Honorable Lord North for services perfomed May and June 1783. Boldly signed North below a note indicating the bill be paid and by Thos. Chetham Clerk of the Cheque and interestingly Hannah North Atty. to William North. Frederick North (Lord North) (1732 - 1792) was Prime Minister of Great Britain during the American Revolution (1770 - 1782). He was forced out of office by a ''no confidence'' vote the first time this occurred after the defeat at Yorktown. This appears to be one of a few known instances (and many more rumors) of women serving as attorneys and solicitors in pre-Victorian England. The law as a profession would not officially open to them until the 1920s. However Hannah may well have been a cousin or other relative of Lord North and thus also likely to have been educated at least literate. Of note a legal ''do it yourself'' book was published in 1668 (The Compleat Solicitor Entring-Clark and Attorney) and some (men and women) used this route to the profession. Condition: Folds and minor toning as expected. Mounted along the edge into a larger sheet of heavy paper.
